Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over East Boston

The silence inside the study was suffocating.

Sophia stood up, her face turning pale as she read the absolute, lethal fury written across Alessandro’s expression. "Mr. Moretti? Who was that? What did he say about Thomas's accident?"

Alessandro looked at her, his eyes dark with a cold, terrifying clarity. "Vittorio Romano."

Sophia’s breath caught. "Romano? The man who owns the dry docks?"

"The crane failure that killed your husband two years ago," Alessandro said softly, stepping around the desk to stand before her. "It wasn't an accident, was it?"

Sophia’s hands began to tremble violently. "Thomas... Thomas told me three days before he died that he found illegal contraband hidden inside Romano’s shipping containers at Pier 4. He said he was going to the port authority. Three days later... the crane line snapped. The police called it mechanical fatigue. But I knew... I always knew."

Tears spilled down her cheeks as the trauma she had carried in silence for two years flooded back. "They killed him. And now... now they're watching me and Emma?"

"They are watching you because Vittorio thinks you are my weakness," Alessandro growled, pulling out his phone and dialing his head of private security, a former Special Forces officer named Frank. "Frank! Get three tactical security teams to the estate right now! I want a full perimeter lockdown on 219 Beacon Hill, and I want two unmarked units tracking every movement around Webster Street in East Boston!"

"Alessandro," Arthur warned from the chair. "If Vittorio is threatening you with physical violence or extortion, we need to go to the Federal District Attorney!"

"The DA takes forty-eight hours to issue a warrant," Alessandro snapped, turning to face his attorney. "Vittorio Romano operates in the dark. He thinks because I’ve softened my heart, I’ve lost my teeth. He is about to learn that protecting something you care about makes a man infinitely more dangerous than protecting money."

He turned back to Sophia, taking her shaking hands into his own. His grip was firm, steady, and unyielding.

"You and Emma are not going back to East Boston tonight," Alessandro said with absolute authority. "You are moving into the guest wing of this house immediately. My security team will guard every foot of this property. No one touches your daughter, Sophia. I give you my word as a Moretti."

Sophia looked into his eyes—eyes that had once held only suspicion and cold distance, but now shone with a fierce, protective fire.

"I trust you, Alessandro," she whispered.
