Chapter 5 - The Truth Unveiled

The final blow to the defense came on the fifth day of the trial, when a surprise witness took the stand.

It was Sarah Lin—the former head housekeeper at Elmridge Manor, who had abruptly resigned two weeks before the fire and fled to Maryland after receiving a fifty-thousand-dollar hush-money payment from Richard Vance.

After being tracked down by Detective Thorne and offered full immunity from federal prosecutors, Sarah sat on the witness stand, her voice trembling as she testified under oath.

"Mrs. Vance told me to put gray powder into Miss Evie’s evening tea every night starting in May," Sarah sobbed into a tissue. "She told me it was a natural holistic vitamin supplement to help her sleep. But when I found a small glass bottle hidden in Mrs. Vance’s dressing room marked with a skull symbol, I realized what it was. I was terrified. I tried to leave, but Mr. Vance threatened to have my son deported if I said a word!"

"Did you ever hear Mr. and Mrs. Vance discussing the night of the fire?" Victoria asked.

"Yes," Sarah whispered. "The night before I left, I overheard them arguing in the library. Mr. Vance said, 'The insurance company will pay out twelve million for the house, and the trust will absorb the rest of her share once she’s gone. It’s the only way out of the debt.' Mrs. Vance was crying, but she said, 'Just make sure she doesn't feel anything. Make sure the smoke gets her first.'"

A collective wave of horror washed through the courtroom. Several jurors were visibly crying, while others glared at Richard and Claire with pure, unadulterated fury.

The defense had no cross-examination. They were completely, utterly broken.

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in Virginia legal history.

When the jury foreman stood up to read the verdict, the entire courtroom held its breath.

"On Count One, Capital Attempted Murder: Guilty. On Count Two, Aggravated Arson: Guilty. On Count Three, Conspiracy to Commit Homicide: Guilty. On Count Four, Unlawful Poisoning: Guilty."

Judge Harrison looked down at the defendants with cold, unyielding justice.

"Richard Vance, Claire Vance," Judge Harrison spoke, his deep voice echoing through the silent chamber. "You displayed a level of cold, calculating cruelty that defies human comprehension. You traded the life of your own child for financial gain. It is the sentence of this court that you both be remanded to the custody of the Virginia Department of Corrections to serve Life Sentences without the possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Richard and Claire away in heavy leg irons, Claire looked back at Evie one last time, weeping, mouthing the words, "I'm sorry, Evie... I'm sorry!"

Evie didn't answer. She didn't cry. She simply stood beside her Aunt Victoria, watching the people who had tried to destroy her disappear behind the heavy iron doors of justice forever.
