Chapter 1 - The Ashes of Elmridge Manor

The quiet echo of the heavy brass padlock settling on the hospital linoleum felt like a thunderclap inside the corridor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

Detective Elias Thorne walked slowly toward the small group, his worn leather shoes clicking against the floor. He knelt down without a word, pulled a pair of nitrile gloves from his brown jacket pocket, and lifted the scorched lock by its twisted shackle. He turned it over in his hand, observing the charred metal, the melted zinc core, and the microscopic traces of doorway wood fiber still fused to the latch mechanism.

"Interesting piece of hardware, Mr. Vance," Detective Thorne said, his gravelly voice cool and measured. "Looks like a heavy-duty master lock. The kind usually sold with commercial security chains. Not something you find on an interior bedroom door of a historic Richmond estate."

Richard Vance adjusted his silk tie, his posture stiffening as the polished composure of a wealthy real estate developer reasserted itself. "Detective, my daughter has just suffered severe carbon monoxide inhalation and physical trauma. She is confused, disoriented, and clearly suffering from smoke-induced delirium. That lock could have come from anywhere in the debris—the wine cellar, the garden shed, or the tool room."

"I took it off my door frame with a crowbar from my closet," Evie said, her voice steady, cold, and unwavering. She pulled back the sleeve of her thin blue hospital robe, exposing her right palm. The skin was raw, blistered, and stained with black soot in the exact shape of a crowbar grip. "I had to break my own doorframe down while the room filled with toxic smoke because the deadbolt on the hallway side was engaged."

Claire Vance stepped forward, her face turning pale as paper under the harsh fluorescent lights, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat. "Evie, sweetheart, please... you're making a scene! You don't understand what happened last night! The security system malfunctioned! The automated fire doors triggered throughout the east wing!"

"The east wing doesn't have automated fire doors, Mom," Evie replied, taking a step toward her mother. "You had the contractor remove them during the renovation three years ago to preserve the historic molding. You know it. I know it. And Detective Thorne can check the city building permits in ten minutes."

Detective Thorne looked at the uniformed Henrico County officer standing beside him. "Officer Hayes, please secure the perimeter around Elmridge Manor. Nobody enters the property—not the private security team, not the insurance adjusters, and certainly not Mr. Vance's cleanup crews. Tell the arson unit I want a full forensic grid sweep of the second-floor east corridor."

"You have no authority to lock down my private residence without a warrant, Thorne!" Richard growled, his aristocratic mask slipping, revealing the sharp, arrogant edge beneath.

"Actually, Mr. Vance, in a potential homicide or attempted murder investigation involving arson, I have all the authority I need," Detective Thorne said smoothly. "Now, why don't we all step down to the precinct? I think it's time we talked about the five-million-dollar trust fund your daughter was scheduled to inherit on her twenty-fifth birthday... which happens to be midnight tonight."

Claire gasped softly, covering her mouth with a gloved hand. Richard’s jaw clenched so hard a vein bulged along his temple.

Evie stood tall in her hospital gown, watching the parents who had tucked her into bed as a child, who had sent her to elite prep schools, and who had ultimately locked her in a room to burn alive for a corporate payout.

"I'm going with you, Detective," Evie said quietly. "Because there's something else they didn't get to burn in that fire."
