Chapter 3 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

By dawn the following morning, the sun broke over the charred remains of Elmridge Manor.

The magnificent Georgian mansion, once the crown jewel of Richmond's historic district, was now a hollow, blackened shell. Smoke still drifted into the overcast sky from the collapsed roof of the west wing, but the east wing—where Evie’s room was located—remained largely intact thanks to the heavy brick firewalls.

Detective Thorne, Victoria, and Evie stood behind the yellow police tape as the state arson investigation unit worked through the ruins.

Lead Arson Investigator Agent Vance—no relation—walked down the grand front steps carrying a metallic evidence bag. He met them near the police cruisers.

"It’s an open-and-shut case of arson, Thorne," Agent Vance reported, holding up the bag. Inside was a melted glass bottle and a charred battery-operated incendiary trigger. "The fire started in three distinct locations simultaneously on the ground floor beneath the east wing. They used an industrial accelerant—tetrachloroethylene mixed with diesel fuel. It burns hot, fast, and generates massive amounts of carbon monoxide to ensure anyone upstairs suffocates long before the flames reach them."

Evie shuddered, pulling Victoria’s wool coat tightly around her shoulders. "They didn't just want me dead. They wanted to make sure my body was burned beyond recognition so no one could perform an autopsy."

"They failed," Detective Thorne said, pulling out his ringing cell phone. He answered it, listened silently for thirty seconds, his expression darkening into pure steel.

He lowered the phone and looked at Evie and Victoria. "The hospital toxicology report just came back. Your blood contained high concentrations of Zolpidem—a heavy prescription sedative—mixed with traces of arsenic."

Victoria gasped. "Arsenic?!"

"Micro-doses," Thorne explained. "They were poisoning her slowly over the last three months to weaken her immune system and make her appear sickly to the family doctor. If the fire hadn't worked, she would have suffered 'organ failure' within weeks."

At that moment, two sleek black luxury sedans pulled up to the police line across the driveway.

Richard Vance stepped out, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys in sharp grey suits. Behind them, Claire Vance emerged wearing dark sunglasses, attempting to hide her blotchy, panicked face from the local news vans that had begun assembling down the street.

Richard walked up to the police tape, his hands in his pockets, affecting an air of aggrieved outrage.

"Detective Thorne!" Richard called out loudly, making sure the news cameras caught every word. "I demand to know why my daughter is being held in police custody without access to her family! She is traumatized! We want to take her home!"

Evie stepped forward, ducking under the yellow police tape before Thorne or Victoria could stop her.

She walked directly toward her father, stopping two feet away from him on the gravel driveway. The morning light caught the burns on her face, the soot on her clothes, and the fierce, unshakeable strength shining in her green eyes.

"I am home, Dad," Evie said, her voice echoing clearly over the hum of the television news vans. "Because wherever you and Mom are going... it won't have silk sheets or private security."

Richard leaned in, his voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper. "Evie, be reasonable. You're ruining everything! Do you have any idea what happens to the Vance name if this gets out? We can settle this privately! I'll give you half the trust!"

"The trust isn't yours to give, Richard," Victoria announced, stepping up beside her niece, holding up a certified court order signed by a state judge. "As of two hours ago, the Virginia Supreme Court issued an emergency injunction freezing all personal and corporate assets of Richard and Claire Vance. Furthermore, full legal power of attorney over Vance Global Logistics has been officially transferred to Evelyn Vance."

Richard stared at his sister, then at his daughter, his jaw trembling as the reality of his total ruin set in.

"You... you can't do this to me!" Richard roared, lunging forward!

"Richard Vance!" Detective Thorne shouted, drawing his sidearm while two deputies tackled Richard to the ground! "You are under arrest for attempted capital murder, aggravated arson, conspiracy, and illegal administration of a controlled substance!"

Claire shrieked as steel handcuffs clicked around Richard's wrists, while two female officers stepped up behind her, snapping another pair of cuffs over her delicate silk sleeves.

As her parents were forced into the back of police cruisers under the blinding flashes of media cameras, Evie stood tall, holding her aunt's hand, taking her first deep, clean breath of fresh air in years.
