Chapter 3 - Trapped in the Web

"Why didn't you tell me on the first day?" I wept, clutching my trembling head.

"Because they are monitoring every breath you take!" Lucía warned. "Tomás forced me into this marriage because he knew I found fake asset-transfer documents in his safe. He threatened to murder my parents back home if I breathed a word. The landlines are tapped, the car fuel lines are tampered with, and there are hidden cameras in the hallways. If they realize you know the truth, Esteban won't wait for the cover of night. He will finish it immediately!"

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside.

The pantry door swung open with a sharp creak. A tall shadow stretched across the floor.

Esteban stood in the threshold, grease smudged on his knuckles. He looked at me, then at Lucía. His signature, charming smile appeared on his lips, but his eyes were pitch-black and devoid of warmth.

"What are you two ladies whispering about in the dark?" Esteban asked smoothly, his voice laced with unspoken malice.

I felt my heart slam against my ribs. Stepping forward to cover Lucía’s trembling hands behind my back, I forced my voice to stay steady: "I... I was just asking Lucía for her herbal tea recipe. I've been feeling so tired lately."

Esteban stepped closer, his heavy shoes thudding softly against the floor. He raised a hand and stroked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers felt like ice.

"Feeling tired?" Esteban purred, tilting his head. "I told you, darling, your mind is slipping. Look how pale you are. I think you should go to bed early tonight. And..." He turned his sharp gaze toward Lucía. "...I think Lucía should sleep in her own room from now on. She’s invaded our privacy long enough. Don't you agree, Tomás?"

Tomás stepped up behind Esteban. My younger brother—the boy I had raised and put through college—stared at me with cold, detached indifference.

"She's right," Tomás said flatly. "Lucía has been acting crazy lately. I'll lock her in our bedroom tonight so she doesn't wander around troubling you two anymore."

The trap was closing. They were done waiting. Tonight was meant to be my final night alive.
