Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth Beside Me

The silence in the bedroom was suffocating, so absolute that the frantic pounding of my heart sounded like a war drum in my ears. The faint, sharp click that had pierced the darkness seconds ago still echoed inside my head. For seventeen days, I had lived in a haze of suspicion and resentment. I had looked at Lucía—my younger brother’s new bride—with disgust. I had convinced myself she was a manipulative trespasser, obsessed with my husband, or simply insane, trying to dismantle my marriage piece by piece.
But in that frozen, pitch-black second beneath the blankets, as Lucía’s ice-cold hand clamped around mine like a iron vise, my entire reality shattered.
She wasn’t looking for Esteban’s protection. She was using her own body as a living shield to protect me from him.
A paper-thin sliver of light crawled under the bedroom door, cutting across the wooden floorboards before fading into the shadows. It was from a small pocket flashlight carried by Tomás—my own blood brother. I heard his soft, unnaturally cautious footsteps retreating down the hallway. He was checking on the progress. He was monitoring the trap.
Lucía slowly released my hand, her body trembling violently under the thin sheet, yet she didn't utter a single sound. Beside her, Esteban remained motionless. His breathing was slow, deep, and steady—far too steady. It was not the breath of a sleeping man. It was the calculated breathing of a predator lying in wait, forced to pause because Lucía had snatched his opportunity away.
I lay frozen until dawn. As the first rays of morning light bled through the window blinds, Esteban stirred lazily. He sat up, stretched, and pressed a tender kiss against my cheek.
"Good morning, my love," he whispered smoothly, his voice warm with devotion.

The feel of his lips against my skin made my flesh crawl. A wave of nausea rushed up my throat, but I forced my facial muscles into a frail smile. "Good morning, Esteban."
I glanced over at Lucía. She was silently folding her blanket. For a fraction of a second, our eyes locked. No words were spoken, but an unwritten pact was forged between two women trapped in a house of horror. I desperately needed to get her alone, but Esteban acted like a shadow, clinging to my side all morning with an unsettling, suffocating attentiveness.
