Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Three Months Later

The winter snow had transformed the Valenti estate into a breathtaking white wonderland. The frozen lake glistened like glass under the pale afternoon sun, and smoke curled gently from the stone chimney of the West Cottage.

Matteo walked down the snowy stone path leading from the main mansion to the cottage, carrying a wooden box filled with freshly cut pine logs for the fireplace.

Inside the cottage, the air was warm, smelling of roasted chicken, garlic, and fresh bread. Elena was standing at the kitchen counter, wearing a beige wool sweater and jeans, her dark hair tied back in a loose, elegant clip.

As Matteo knocked gently and stepped inside, setting the logs down by the hearth, Sophie came running out of the living room wearing a pair of red reindeer slippers.

"Matteo!" she cheered, throwing her arms around his knees.

Matteo laughed, lifting the six-year-old girl effortlessly into his arms, tossing her gently into the air before holding her close. "Have you been a good girl today, little rabbit?"

"I helped Mommy bake the pie!" Sophie announced proudly, pointing toward the kitchen counter.

"She mostly ate the sugar, but yes, she helped," Elena teased, walking over with a towel in her hands, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

Matteo set Sophie down, watching her run off to play with her toys in the living room. He stepped closer to Elena, looking down at her face. Over the last three months, the professional distance between them had completely evaporated, replaced by an unspoken, magnetic affection that grew stronger with every passing day.

"How was the city?" Elena asked softly, reaching up to gently brush a flake of snow from his dark hair.

"The trial for Celeste ended an hour ago," Matteo reported, his hand settling naturally over her waist.

Elena stilled, looking into his eyes. "And?"

"Twenty-five years without parole," Matteo said softly. "Marco received ten years due to his cooperation regarding the broader financial network. It’s completely over, Elena. The past has no power over this house anymore."

Elena let out a long, quiet sigh, leaning her head against Matteo’s chest. He wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her close, resting his chin against the top of her head.

"I used to lie awake in that dark room under the west wing," Elena whispered against his sweater, "counting the seconds, convinced that nobody was coming for me. Convinced that Sophie and I were completely forgotten by the world."

Matteo lifted her chin gently with his finger, forcing her to look into his dark, fierce eyes.

"You will never be forgotten again, Elena," Matteo said, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "I spent ten years living in this massive estate alone, surrounded by marble and money, believing that my heart was dead. But when I saw you holding Sophie in that dark room... I realized my life didn't start until I found you."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat as she searched his face. "Matteo..."

"I love you, Elena," Matteo whispered, his face closing the distance between them. "I love you, and I love your daughter. And I want to spend the rest of my life making sure neither of you ever knows fear again."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled from Elena’s eyes as she wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips against his in a soft, passionate kiss that sealed three months of unspoken longing and a lifetime of healing.
