Chapter 1 - The Breach at the Vault

The electric saw whined like a dying beast, casting showers of yellow sparks across the stone walls of the subterranean passage. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and burning steel.
Matteo stood holding five-year-old Sophie against his shoulder. Her small fingers clutched the back of his Italian wool coat so tightly her knuckles were white. Her face was buried in his neck, her tiny chest heaving with silent, terrified sobs every time another burst of sparks illuminated the dim corridor.
Rinaldi, the estate manager, stood near the wall, his flashlight beam trembling over the new steel deadbolt. Marco stood three paces back, his hands clasped behind his waist, his face a completely unreadable mask.
"Almost through, Mr. Valenti!" the lead security guard yelled over the screeching blade.
With a final, violent crack of snapping metal, the heavy blue door shuddered. The guard kicked the heavy frame right beside the lock.
BOOM!
The old blue door groaned on its hinges and swung inward, revealing a pitch-black chamber that smelled of damp concrete, old iron, and blood.
Rinaldi thrust his flashlight beam into the room.
On the cold stone floor, curled into a tight defensive ball beside a row of rusted wine racks, lay Elena. Her black maid's uniform was torn at the shoulder, covered in gray cement dust. Her face was pale, her lips chapped and cracked from three days without water. But her eyes—bright, fierce, and maternal—snapped open under the sudden assault of light.
"Mommy!" Sophie shrieked.
The child squirmed out of Matteo’s arms, her tiny bare feet slapping against the dusty floorboards as she sprinted across the threshold.
"Sophie... no... stay back..." Elena rasped, her voice barely more than a dry croak as she struggled to push herself up on weak, trembling elbows.
Sophie threw herself onto her mother, wrapping her arms around Elena's neck. Elena pulled her daughter into her chest, burying her face in the girl's tangled hair, weeping tears that washed clean streaks down her dust-covered cheeks.
Matteo stepped into the room, dropping to one knee beside them. He reached out, gently pressing two fingers to Elena’s neck. Her pulse was fast and thready, but she was alive.
"Rinaldi," Matteo commanded, his voice dropping into a deadly register. "Get the medical team down here right now. Bring oxygen, fluids, and a stretcher. No one outside this room hears a word of this."
"Yes, sir!" Rinaldi turned and sprinted back up the corridor.
Matteo leaned closer to Elena, taking her ice-cold hand into his. "Elena. Look at me."
Elena looked up into the dark, fierce eyes of the head of the Valenti estate. "Mr. Matteo... you came back..."
"I'm here," Matteo said softly. "You're safe. Who did this to you?"
Elena’s eyes darted past Matteo’s shoulder, landing directly on Marco, who stood framed in the doorway. She flinched, shrinking back slightly, pulling Sophie tighter against her chest.
"It wasn't just Miss Celeste," Elena whispered, her dry breath rattling in her chest. "She... she found the safe behind your father’s old portrait in the study. The one with the real ledgers. I caught her taking the black binder on Tuesday night."
Matteo’s jaw hardened. The black binder contained the private financial records of the Valenti family—specifically, the documentation proving that Celeste’s late husband, Julian, had embezzled forty million dollars from the family trust before his death, money that Celeste was now desperately trying to hide before the upcoming corporate audit.
"When I tried to call security," Elena continued, tears spilling over her eyelashes, "she called someone on her phone. Two men grabbed me from behind. They dragged me down here... and locked the door."
Matteo stood up slowly, turning around to face the doorway.
Marco hadn't moved. His hand was now resting inside his tailored suit jacket, right over his holster.
"Marco," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Did you supervise the installation of that new lock?"
Marco looked at Matteo. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the soft, broken breathing of the mother and child on the floor.
"She offered me two million dollars, Boss," Marco said softly, his voice devoid of anger, leaving only cold, practical surrender. "My daughter needs an organ transplant in Germany. I’ve served your family for twelve years, Matteo. I took a bullet for you in Milan. But when I asked the trust for an advance on my salary, your board turned me down."

"You should have come to me directly, Marco," Matteo said, taking a single step forward.
"You were in London," Marco replied, pulling his silenced sidearm from his jacket, aiming it straight at Matteo’s chest. "And Celeste was standing in front of me with a cashier's check."
