Chapter 4 - The Recovery and the Vow

Two weeks passed.
The autumn chill settled over the Valenti estate, turning the sprawling oak trees across the grounds into vibrant waves of gold, amber, and deep crimson. The dark cloud that had hung over the estate for years seemed to vanish with Celeste’s arrest and the dismantling of the corrupt staff members.
Matteo had purged forty percent of the estate security, replacing them with trusted former military personnel vetted personally by his primary security director in New York.
On the third floor of the east wing, Elena was sitting in a sunlit breakfast nook, watching Sophie color in a drawing book at the small wooden table. Elena was wearing a simple silk robe, her health fully restored, though a soft faintness still lingered around her eyes whenever she thought about the cold blue door.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Matteo walked in.
He was wearing a comfortable gray cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking less like a feared billionaire tycoon and more like a man at peace in his own home. He carried a silver tray containing a fresh pot of chamomile tea and a plate of warm cinnamon pastries.
"Mr. Matteo," Elena said, standing up quickly. "You don't have to bring us food. I can go down to the kitchen—"
"Sit down, Elena," Matteo smiled softly, placing the tray on the table. "You are not a maid in this house anymore. I’ve told you that three times this week."
Sophie looked up from her coloring book, her big blue eyes lighting up. "Mr. Matteo! Look! I drew the blue door, but I painted a big yellow sunshine over it so it isn't scary anymore!"
Matteo sat down on the small wooden chair beside Sophie, taking the drawing into his hands, looking at it with absolute seriousness.
"That is a masterwork, Sophie," Matteo said softly. "I think we should frame it and put it in my private office."
Sophie giggled, kicking her tiny legs under the chair. "Really?"
"Really," Matteo smiled. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small leather document folder, placing it gently on the table in front of Elena.
Elena looked at the folder, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "What is this?"
"That," Matteo explained, leaning back in his chair, "is the deed to the West Cottage on the lake edge of the estate. It has four bedrooms, a private garden, and a view of the mountains. It is completely renovated, fully furnished, and registered under your name."
Elena’s hand froze over the leather cover. She looked up at Matteo, her breath catching in her throat. "Mr. Matteo... no. I can't accept a house from you. I haven't earned—"
"Elena," Matteo interrupted, his voice dropping into a deep, earnest tone. "You spent four years managing my life while raising a daughter alone on a servant's salary. You suffered three days in a dark tomb because you protected my family's honor. This isn't a gift. It is a fraction of what I owe you."
Elena stared at him, her eyes filling with tears. "I don't know what to say..."
"You don't have to say anything," Matteo said softly. He reached out, gently covering her trembling hand with his own. "There is one more thing. The Valenti Foundation has established an educational trust for Sophie. Her tuition, university, and medical care are completely taken care of for the rest of her life."
Sophie clapped her hands together, looking at her mother. "Does that mean we don't have to leave, Mommy?"

Elena looked from her daughter’s happy face back to Matteo’s warm, steady eyes. For the first time in her life, she felt completely safe—not just physically, but emotionally.
"No, baby," Elena whispered, tears of profound relief pouring down her cheeks as she pulled Sophie into her lap. "We never have to leave."
