Chapter 1 - The Serpent in the Sanctuary

The air inside the master study of the Moretti estate felt colder than a tomb. Rain pounded relentlessly against the bulletproof glass windows, blurring the lights of Long Island in the distance.
Aleandro stood in the middle of the room, staring at the small plastic inhaler sitting inside a sealed evidence bag on his mahogany desk. Standing beside him was Marco, his loyal second-in-command, and Dr. Vance, the chief physician of the Moretti family’s private medical facility.
"The lab analysis is indisputable, Boss," Dr. Vance said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The canister was pressurized with a concentrated aerosolized organophosphate toxin. One deep inhalation is designed to induce severe, irreversible bronchospasm within ninety seconds. To any medical examiner, it would appear as an acute, fatal asthma attack."
Aleandro’s face was carved from granite, but beneath his cold exterior, a dangerous fire burned. "Only three people have access to my private study, Marco. Only three people knew I kept that backup inhaler in my desk drawer."
Marco bowed his head slightly. "We are already checking the security feeds, Boss. But who... who could have planted it?"
Before Aleandro could reply, the heavy wooden door opened, and Sophia Rossi walked into the room. Her face was pale, her hands trembling violently as she clutched her daughter Emma close to her side. Sophia had been interrogated by security for three hours down in the basement before Aleandro had personally ordered her release.
"Mr. Moretti..." Sophia stammered, her voice shaking with terror. "I swear on my life, I didn't know anything about this! I only brought Emma here today because her babysitter canceled... I know I broke the rules, but please... don't hurt my baby!"
Aleandro looked down at five-year-old Emma. The little girl was holding her faded pink rabbit backpack, looking up at the powerful mafia boss without a trace of fear in her wide, innocent eyes.
Aleandro walked slowly across the room, dropping to one knee before the child. For the first time in three years—since the day his wife and daughter were stolen from him—his cold, distant eyes softened with genuine warmth.
"Sophia," Aleandro said gently, without looking away from Emma. "Your daughter saved my life today. If she hadn't noticed the chemical smell in my inhaler and given me her own, I would be dead right now."
Sophia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Emma... you gave him your medicine?"
Emma nodded softly, clutching her rabbit. "The man’s inhaler smelled bad, Mommy. It smelled like dirty metal. I knew he was going to sleep forever if he didn't get real air."
Aleandro reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small leather pouch. He opened it, revealing a fresh, medical-grade inhaler, along with a prescription box for the highest quality pediatric asthma treatment available in the country.
"My personal physician had this delivered thirty minutes ago," Aleandro said, gently placing the medicine into Emma’s hands. "And from this moment on, your daughter will never go a single day without her medicine, nor will she ever know hunger or fear again."
Suddenly, the doors swung open again. Vincent Moretti—Aleandro’s younger cousin and the head of the family’s financial operations—rushed into the study, followed by two armed guards.
"Aleandro!" Vincent yelled, his face flushed with panicked energy. "I just heard what happened! Thank God you're alive! We have the security footage—we know who put the poisoned inhaler in your desk!"

Aleandro stood up slowly, turning to face his cousin. "Do we, Vincent? Who was it?"
"It was her!" Vincent pointed a furious finger directly at Sophia Rossi! "The security camera in the east hallway showed her carrying a laundry hamper past your study at 11:30 AM! She’s an insider paid off by the Falcone syndicate to assassinate you!"
