Chapter 4 - The Hunt for the Accomplices

The Midnight BreakoutThe peace of the Castillo estate was shattered at exactly 2:00 AM on Wednesday.

The high-pitched wail of the mansion’s secondary security alarms echoed through the stone corridors. In his private quarters, Alejandro bolted upright in bed, his hand instinctively reaching for the firearm hidden beneath his pillow. Beside him, Elena gasped, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched the silk sheets.

"Stay here," Alejandro whispered, his voice tense as he slipped out of bed, his tactical instincts kicking in. "The doors are reinforced steel. No one can get in this room."

He stepped out into the hallway, where Mateo was already waiting, a high-caliber rifle in his hands.

"Report!" Alejandro demanded.

"A strike team bypassed the eastern gate," Mateo said, his face grim under the flashing red emergency lights. "They didn't come to attack us, boss. They came for Vivian. They used a military-grade thermite charge to blast through the holding room wall."

"Did they get her?"

"They’re moving toward the perimeter now," Mateo replied, turning toward the stairs. "We have them cornered near the old stables."

Alejandro’s eyes turned pitch-black with fury. "Not on my watch."

The Fire in the StablesThe air outside was freezing, a thick fog rolling in from the lake, mixing with the dark, acrid smoke of the thermite blast.

Alejandro and his tactical team moved silently through the gardens, their weapons raised. In the distance, near the old brick stables, three men in black tactical gear were dragging Vivian toward a waiting SUV. Vivian was hysterical, her hair wild, her expensive silk pajamas stained with soot and dirt.

"Hurry up, you fools!" she screamed at her rescuers. "He’s going to kill me! Get me out of here!"

"Freeze!" Alejandro’s voice cut through the fog like a lightning bolt.

The mercenaries stopped, turning their weapons toward the shadows. But before they could fire, Alejandro’s team opened fire. The quiet night erupted into a symphony of gunfire and shattered glass.

One of the mercenaries collapsed into the dirt, his weapon clattering against the stone. The second tried to return fire, but Mateo took him down with a clean, surgical shot to the shoulder.

The third mercenary, realizing the situation was hopeless, threw his hands into the air, dropping his rifle.

Vivian tried to run toward the SUV, but Alejandro sprinted forward, grabbing her by her collar and slamming her against the side of the vehicle. The metal dented under the force of the impact.

"You really thought you could run, Vivian?" Alejandro whispered, his face inches from hers. His eyes were devoid of any human warmth, looking like the eyes of a wolf cornered in the dark.

"My... my father sent them!" Vivian gasped, her teeth chattering from fear and the biting cold. "He’s going to destroy you, Alejandro! You can't keep me here!"

"I don't need to keep you here anymore," Alejandro said, throwing her to the ground.

He turned to Mateo, who was already cuffing the surviving mercenaries. "Call the federal prosecutor. Tell him we have the Moretti strike team in custody, along with the weapons they used to attack a private residence. And tell him Vivian Moretti was caught trying to flee federal kidnapping charges."

"On it, boss," Mateo said with a grim smile.

Alejandro looked down at Vivian, who was sobbing in the dirt, her hands bound behind her back. "Your father can't save you, Vivian. He’s currently watching his own empire burn. By tomorrow morning, you’ll be sitting in a cell that doesn't have a view of the lake."

The Cleaning of the HouseThe next morning, the Castillo estate was silent once more. The physical damage was already being repaired by construction crews, and the security presence had been doubled.

Alejandro sat in his study, looking at a series of financial reports on his laptop. The hostile takeover of the Moretti holdings was nearly complete.

"Alejandro," a soft voice called out from the doorway.

He looked up to see Elena standing there. She was wearing a simple, elegant cream-colored dress, her face pale but her eyes clear and focused. She was no longer the broken woman he had found on the kitchen floor; she was beginning to reclaim her dignity, her strength.

"You should be resting, El," Alejandro said, standing up and walking over to her.

"I can't rest while you're carrying this entire war on your shoulders," she said, reaching out to touch his face, her fingers gentle against his jaw. "I want to help. I want to face them, Alejandro."

"No," he said gently, shaking his head. "It's too dangerous."

"They kept me in a cage for three years, Alejandro," she said, her voice rising with a sudden, fierce strength. "They tried to erase my name, my life, my love for you. If I don't stand up and show them that they failed, they will always have power over me. I want to testify. I want to look Vivian in the eye in a court of law and show her that she couldn't break me."

Alejandro stared at her, his heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming pride. This was the woman he had married—a woman of fierce intellect, of unbreakable spirit.

"Okay," Alejandro whispered, pulling her into his chest and holding her tight. "We will do it together. Every step of the way."
