Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Sub-Level

The Chamber of ShadowsAlejandro carried Elena up the grand staircase, bypassing the master bedroom that had been desecrated by Vivian’s presence. Instead, he took her to the private medical wing located in the secured northern pavilion of the estate—a state-of-the-art facility he had built for his late father.
He laid her gently onto the pristine white sheets of the medical bed. Within minutes, Dr. Robert Sterling, the family’s trusted private physician, arrived, his face grim as he began to assess Elena’s condition.
"Alejandro," Elena whispered, her fingers clutching his sleeve with a desperate, white-knuckled grip. "Don't leave. Please. If the lights go out, they'll put me back."
"I'm not going anywhere, El," Alejandro said, sitting on the edge of the bed, his hand wrapping around hers. He looked at her wrists, which were covered in deep, dark purple rings—the unmistakable marks of heavy iron shackles.
"Robert," Alejandro said, his voice tight. "Tell me."
Dr. Sterling sighed, gently running a stethoscope over Elena’s chest. "She's severely malnourished, Alejandro. Her vitamin D levels are practically non-existent, which suggests she hasn't seen consistent sunlight in years. The bruising on her wrists and ankles is chronic. These aren't fresh; they are the result of long-term containment in tight restraints."
The doctor looked up, his eyes filled with professional outrage. "And there are signs of chemical sedation. Her pupillary response is sluggish. They’ve been keeping her compliant with low-grade tranquilizers."
Alejandro’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. He looked at Elena, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "Where did they keep you, Elena? How did I not find you?"
Elena swallowed hard, a tear slipping down her cheek.
"Under the wine cellar," she whispered. "The old storm bunker from the 1920s. Vivian found the blueprints. She had her men reinforce the steel doors. They built a room behind the false wine racks. I could hear your footsteps, Alejandro. I could hear you walking above me. I screamed... I screamed until my throat bled, but the concrete was too thick."
A heavy silence descended upon the room. The horror of her words washed over Alejandro like a tidal wave of acid. He had lived in this house. He had drank wine from that cellar. He had sat in his study, drinking himself into a stupor out of grief, while the woman he loved was screaming for him directly beneath his feet.
The Betrayal on the Payroll"Who helped her?" Alejandro asked, his voice dropping to a whisper that was far more terrifying than a shout. "Vivian couldn't have kept you down there alone. She needed food brought to you. She needed someone to keep watch when I was home."
Elena closed her eyes, a shudder running through her thin frame. "Mrs. Gable," she murmured. "And Thomas."
Mrs. Gable was the head housekeeper, a woman who had worked for the Castillo family for over fifteen years. Thomas was the night security supervisor, the man responsible for the estate's external perimeter and CCTV feeds.
Alejandro stood up slowly. The sheer, concentrated malice radiating from him made even Dr. Sterling take a step back.
"Robert, take care of her," Alejandro commanded. "Mateo is outside. No one else enters this room."
"Alejandro, please," Elena called out, her voice filled with panic as she saw him move toward the door.
He turned, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. He walked back to the bed, leaned down, and kissed her lips gently. "I am going to clean our house, my love. Rest. When you wake up, the monsters will be gone."
He stepped out into the corridor, where Mateo was waiting.
"Tell me you have them," Alejandro said.
"We caught Mrs. Gable trying to load a suitcase into her car at the service entrance," Mateo replied, his face hard. "Thomas tried to delete the security server logs from the main terminal, but we intercepted him. They're both in the holding cells downstairs."
"Bring them to the cellar," Alejandro said, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying light. "Let's see how they like the room they built for my wife."
The Confrontation in the DarkThe air in the sub-level of the mansion was damp and smelled of old brick and dust. Alejandro walked down the stone steps, the sound of his boots echoing like a death knell.
In the center of the concrete room, tied to two heavy wooden chairs, were Mrs. Gable and Thomas. Both were pale, sweating profusely, their eyes darting around the dark space. Behind them stood the heavy, reinforced steel door of the hidden bunker—the prison where Elena had spent three years of her life.
Alejandro stood before them, his hands tucked casually into his pockets, but his posture was that of a predator ready to strike.
"Fifteen years, Martha," Alejandro said softly, looking at the elderly housekeeper. "My father paid for your husband’s cancer treatments. I bought your daughter her first home. And you sold my wife for what? A Moretti bribe?"
Mrs. Gable sobbed, shaking her head. "Alejandro, please! They threatened my family! Vivian said if I didn't help her, she would have the Moretti men kill my grandchildren! I didn't have a choice!"
"There is always a choice," Alejandro whispered. He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. "You chose to listen to her. You chose to carry trays of scraps down to my wife. You watched her wither away while you polished my silver."
He turned to Thomas, who was trying to look brave but was visibly shaking. "And you. The head of my security. You bypassed the cameras. You erased the logs. You made sure the search teams I hired never looked in this direction."
"I was paid ten million, Castillo," Thomas spat, trying to show some defiance. "A man would be a fool to turn that down. Your wife was a ghost anyway. What difference did it make?"
Before Thomas could finish his sentence, Alejandro’s fist struck him across the face. The force of the blow sent the chair tilting backward, crashing onto the concrete floor. Thomas groaned, blood spraying from his shattered nose.
Alejandro didn't even look at him. He turned back to Mateo.
"Transfer Mrs. Gable to the federal authorities. Charge her with kidnapping, conspiracy, and attempted murder. Make sure her legal representation is handled by our firm—which means she will get the maximum sentence allowed by law."
"And Thomas?" Mateo asked.
Alejandro looked down at the bleeding security guard on the floor. "Thomas has a lot of information about the Moretti family’s local operations. Keep him here. Let our interrogators have some fun. When he's finished talking, hand him over to the police in a garbage bag."

"With pleasure, boss," Mateo replied.
Alejandro turned and walked out of the cellar, the heavy metal door slamming shut behind him, sealing the traitors in the very darkness they had created.
