Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Syndicate

The Call of the DonThe next morning, the Castillo estate was under full military-grade lockdown. Tactical teams patrolled the perimeter, and the high-tech security gates were shut tight against the outside world.

In his private study, Alejandro sat behind his mahogany desk, staring at a secure satellite phone. Beside him stood his chief legal counsel, Sophia Sterling, and Mateo.

The phone began to ring. The caller ID was private, but Alejandro knew exactly who was on the other end. He pressed the receiver to his ear.

"Castillo," a deep, gravelly voice rasped. It was Don Silvio Moretti, the patriarch of the Moretti Syndicate and one of the most feared men in the Midwest. "You’ve made a very noisy move in my territory. My daughter is missing, her accounts are frozen, and my associates are telling me your shipping lines are refusing our cargo."

"Your daughter isn't missing, Silvio," Alejandro said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "She’s currently sitting in a holding cell under my estate. And she’s going to stay there until she’s transferred to a federal penitentiary for human trafficking and kidnapping."

A cold, heavy silence stretched over the line.

"You're playing a dangerous game, boy," Silvio growled. "Elena was a liability. My daughter did you a favor by putting her away. You were supposed to marry Vivian, merge our assets, and rule this city. Instead, you're throwing a tantrum over a woman who is already broken."

"If you think Elena is broken, Silvio, you underestimate what I am willing to do to put her back together," Alejandro replied, his eyes narrowing. "Every asset your family owns in this country is built on Castillo infrastructure. Your banks, your shell companies, your distribution routes—I own the soil they are built on. By noon today, I am going to initiate a hostile takeover of every single one of them."

"You don't have the leverage," Silvio laughed, though there was a hint of nervousness in his tone.

"I have Thomas," Alejandro said simply. "He’s currently singing like a bird to my security team. We have the ledger of your offshore accounts, the names of the senators on your payroll, and the coordinates of your private docks. If you don't cooperate, I will drop that file onto the desk of the FBI Director before lunch."

The line went dead. Silvio had hung up, but the message had been received. The war had officially begun.

The Power of the PenAlejandro turned to Sophia, his lawyer. "How is the corporate takeover looking?"

"It's clean, Alejandro," Sophia said, opening a sleek leather folder. "Because the Morettis used Castillo shell companies to launder their funds under the guise of the merger, we have direct legal access to their primary accounts. The moment we file the fraud charges with the SEC, their board of directors will have no choice but to freeze all operations to avoid federal indictment. We can buy their shares for pennies on the dollar."

"Do it," Alejandro commanded. "I want the Moretti family bankrupt by the end of the week. I want them to realize that their entire empire was nothing more than a shadow cast by my family's wealth."

"And what about Vivian?" Mateo asked. "Her lawyers are already filing habeas corpus petitions."

"Let them file," Alejandro sneered. "We have physical evidence of her keeping a prisoner in a locked room on our property. The police are already on our payroll; they won't act on those petitions until I tell them to. Keep her isolated. I want her to feel the walls closing in."

He stood up, walking to the window that overlooked the courtyard. The morning sun was rising, casting long, golden beams across the stone pavement. For three years, he had lived in a grey world of grief and anger. But now, the sun was shining again.

He had to check on Elena.

The Beginning of HealingAlejandro walked back to the medical wing. The guard at the door bowed his head as Alejandro entered the room.

The space had been transformed. The harsh medical lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp. Elena was sitting up in bed, wearing a clean, soft silk nightgown that Alejandro had ordered from her old wardrobe. Her hair had been washed and brushed, falling in soft brown waves around her shoulders.

She was looking out the window, her hand resting on a plate of fresh fruit and warm broth.

"How are you feeling, my love?" Alejandro asked, walking over and sitting in the chair beside her.

Elena turned her head, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. "The broth is warm. I... I haven't had warm food in so long, Alejandro. They used to bring me cold bread and water once a day. Sometimes twice if Vivian was in a good mood."

Alejandro took her hand, kissing her knuckles. "You will never have to eat cold bread again, El. I have hired a private chef just for you. Anything you want, anytime you want it."

She looked at him, her eyes searching his face. "Is it true? Is the war really over?"

"It’s just beginning, but you don't have to fight it," Alejandro said, leaning forward to brush a strand of hair behind her ear. "I am going to handle the Morettis. I am going to make sure they can never touch you again. Your only job now is to heal."

"I was so afraid you had forgotten me," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Every time I heard your voice upstairs, I thought... I thought you were happy with her."

"I was never happy, Elena," Alejandro said, his eyes filled with a fierce, burning loyalty. "I was a ghost walking through this house. But now, you are home. And we are going to rebuild this family, brick by brick."
