Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The aftermath of the warehouse raid sent shockwaves throughout New York’s underworld. Antonio Valenti and his syndicate were dismantled by federal indictments, fueled by damning evidence provided by Vincent. The Caruso empire was finally secure.
However, the dark cloud over the Caruso estate remained. Elena was brought back to the estate to recover in the guest wing under medical care.
The mansion felt tense and quiet. Maya stayed in Ethan’s room, packing her small suitcase. She knew that now that Elena had returned—Ethan’s birth mother—her role in this house was over. Her heart was breaking into a thousand pieces, but she forced herself to remain strong.
A soft knock sounded at the door. Maya opened it to find Elena standing there, wrapped in a soft silk robe.
"May I come in?" Elena asked gently.
Maya nodded, stepping aside. "Of course."
Elena walked over to the bed where Ethan was sleeping peacefully, clutching his napkin rabbit. Elena reached out to touch his face, but stopped herself, her hand trembling.
"He loves you," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "When I tried to speak to him this morning, he looked for you. He asked where 'Maya' was."
"He’s just used to me being around," Maya said softly, looking down at her shoes. "He’s your son, Elena. He missed you."
Elena turned to look at Maya, a sad, honest smile on her lips. "I abandoned him, Maya. I was terrified of Valenti, yes, but deep down, I was weak. I wasn't brave enough to stand by Vincent and fight for our family. I ran away. But you... you walked straight into a room full of monsters just to save my boy."
Maya blinked back her tears. "I just wanted him to be safe."
"I saw the way Vincent looks at you, Maya," Elena continued, stepping closer and taking Maya’s hands in hers. "In the seven years I was married to Vincent, he never looked at me with the absolute terror of losing someone that he had in his eyes when Valenti held a gun to you at the docks. I loved Vincent once, but our marriage was built on duty. Yours is built on something real."
Elena squeezed Maya’s hands gently. "I am leaving for Europe tomorrow morning to start a new life and heal. I want you to stay. I want you to be the mother Ethan deserves."
Maya stood frozen as Elena walked quietly out of the room.
An hour later, Maya walked down to the estate’s grand library. The fireplace roared, casting warm golden light over the dark mahogany bookshelves. Vincent stood by the tall glass windows, a glass of bourbon in his hand, his shoulder tightly bandaged beneath a crisp white shirt.
Maya stepped into the room, her heart beating furiously. "Elena told me she’s leaving."
Vincent turned around slowly. "I know. We spoke."
"So... what happens now?" Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Your war is over. Your brother Daniel is fully funded and recovering rapidly—the doctors say he’ll walk again in six months. My job here is done."
Vincent set his glass down on the wooden desk with a sharp thud. He walked across the room, closing the distance between them until he was standing directly in front of her.
"Your job?" Vincent’s voice was dangerously low, thick with intense emotion. "You think this was just a job, Maya?"
"You paid me fifty thousand dollars a month, Vincent," Maya reminded him, though her eyes were shining with unshed tears. "That was the deal."
"To hell with the deal!" Vincent snapped passionately, taking her face in his large, warm hands. "You think I can just let you walk out of my life after you saved my son? After you saved me?"
Maya’s breath hitched. "Vincent..."
"I was a dead man walking before you walked into that restaurant, Maya," Vincent confessed, his dark gray eyes searching hers with overwhelming vulnerability. "I was cold, ruthless, and buried in darkness. You brought light back into this house. You brought my son back to life. And you made me feel human again."
He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. "I don't care about the money. I don't care about the past. I love you, Maya Bennett. Stay with me. Not as a nanny. Not as an employee. As my wife. As Ethan’s mother."
May you like
Tears finally spilled over Maya’s eyelashes. She raised her hands, touching his jaw, feeling the warmth of his skin. "I love you too, Vincent. So much."
Vincent pulled her into his arms, pressing his lips against hers in a deep, passionate kiss that wiped away months of fear, pain, and uncertainty. The shadow of the mafia world seemed to melt away in the warmth of their embrace.
