Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Shadows

The first week at the Caruso estate was a trial by fire. While Ethan slowly began to open up—laughing, eating full meals, and holding Maya’s hand during walks through the glass conservatory—the atmosphere around the estate grew increasingly paranoid.
Maya soon realized that the Caruso family was at war. Vincent was the leader of the Five Families’ council, a position that brought infinite wealth but constant threats. Yet, despite his brutal reputation, Maya noticed small, unexpected details about Vincent. He never missed coming into Ethan’s room at night to check on him, standing silently by the door just to watch his son sleep. He was a man trapped between his dangerous duty and a broken heart.
One rainy afternoon, while Ethan was taking a nap, Maya decided to explore the west wing of the estate—a area that Mrs. Gable had explicitly warned her was off-limits. Driven by a gut feeling that Ethan’s safety depended on knowing the whole truth, she slipped into a dimly lit room that turned out to be Elena’s former private art studio.
Dust covered canvas frames, but the room remained intact. Maya walked over to a desk covered in scattered papers. Among fashion sketches and charity event invitations, she noticed a hidden compartment beneath the desk drawer. Pushing a small latch, the panel slid open to reveal a burner phone and a leather-bound journal.
Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs. She picked up the journal and flipped to the last entry, dated three days before the fatal accident.
“He found out. Vincent thinks I’m just taking money, but he doesn’t understand the danger. The Valenti family knows about Ethan. If I don’t run, they will use my son to destroy the Caruso empire. I have no choice. I have to disappear, even if it breaks my baby’s heart. Forgive me, Ethan.”
Maya gasped. Elena hadn’t abandoned Ethan out of greed—she was running from a rival syndicate, the Valentis!
Suddenly, the door behind her slammed open.
Maya spun around, hiding the journal behind her back. Standing in the doorway was Mrs. Gable, her eyes cold as ice, accompanied by two armed guards Maya hadn't seen before.
"You were told this room was off-limits, Ms. Bennett," Mrs. Gable said, her voice dropping its polite façade, turning sharp and sinister.
"I... I lost my way," Maya lied, stepping back toward the window.
"Lying doesn't suit a waitress," Mrs. Gable sneered, stepping into the room as the two guards blocked the exit. "You think you're special because the master brought you here? You're just a disposable peasant. Hand over whatever you took from that desk."
Maya’s eyes widened. Mrs. Gable wasn't protecting Vincent’s privacy—she was looking for something herself! "You're working for them, aren't you? You're helping the Valentis!"
Mrs. Gable gave a wicked smile. "Smart girl. Too smart for your own good. Get her."
The two guards lunged forward. Maya reacted on pure instinct. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue from a nearby table and slammed it against the first guard’s head. He stumbled back, groaning. She ducked under the second guard’s arm, threw the heavy journal through the glass window to the garden below, and sprinted out of the room into the hallway, screaming for help.
"Marcus! Vincent!"
Footsteps echoed from the main staircase. The second guard caught up to Maya, grabbing her hair and slamming her against the wooden banister. Maya fought back viciously, digging her nails into his face. He cursed, drawing a suppressed pistol.
BANG.
A gunshot shattered the air, but it wasn't from the guard's gun. The guard collapsed onto the floor, a bullet hole in his shoulder.
Vincent stood at the end of the hallway, a smoking gun in his hand, his eyes burning with absolute, murderous rage. Behind him stood Marcus and four armed men.
"Maya!" Vincent roared, crossing the distance in massive strides. He grabbed the remaining guard by the throat, slamming him into the wall with terrifying force, snapping the man's wrist with his bare hand until the gun clattered to the floor.
"Mr. Caruso! She was snooping—" Mrs. Gable stammered, coming out of the room, her face white as snow.
Vincent didn't even look at Mrs. Gable. He handed his gun to Marcus. "Kill the guards. Keep Mrs. Gable alive in the basement. I want to know every name she sold my family to."
Marcus dragged the screaming housekeeper away while the guards dragged the injured men out.
Vincent immediately turned to Maya, grabbing her shoulders, his hands surprisingly gentle as his eyes swept over her face and arms for injuries. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"
"I'm... I'm fine," Maya breathed, trembling violently as the rush of adrenaline left her body. "The window... I threw a book out the window. Elena’s journal. Vincent, she didn't leave because she hated you! She was running from the Valenti family! They were threatening Ethan!"
Vincent froze. The cold, impenetrable barrier around his heart seemed to crack for a split second. "What did you say?"
May you like
"Read the journal," Maya whispered, leaning into his chest without realizing it, her body shaking from shock.
Vincent wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her tightly against his broad chest in front of his surviving guards. "You saved my family's truth, Maya," he whispered near her ear, his tone fierce and protective. "No one touches you in this house again. I swear it on my life."
