Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at the Docks

Maya woke up with a pounding headache, her wrists tied tightly behind her back with thick rope. The smell of salt air, rust, and damp mold filled her senses.

She opened her eyes to find herself tied to a chair in an abandoned warehouse down at the Brooklyn Docks. Cold wind whistled through broken windowpanes. Standing in front of her were Antonio Valenti and three armed henchmen.

To her absolute horror, tied to a chair next to her was a woman with bruised cheeks, messy dark hair, and hollow eyes. Though exhausted and pale, the woman's features were instantly recognizable from the paintings at the estate.

Elena Caruso.

"Elena?" Maya gasped out loud.

Elena turned her tired eyes toward Maya, a look of profound sorrow on her face. "You... you must be the girl looking after Ethan. I saw the news... they called you his nanny."

"She’s more than a nanny, my dear Elena," Antonio Valenti sneered, walking around them with a gun in his hand. "She’s Vincent’s new weakness. I originally took you to force Vincent into giving up his docks. But when he didn't surrender, I realized I needed a bigger bait. Now, I have his past... and his future."

"Leave her out of this, Valenti!" Elena yelled, her voice hoarse. "Maya has nothing to do with your war! Let her go!"

"Shut up!" Valenti slapped Elena across the face, causing her to cry out.

Maya’s eyes flared with fury. "Don't touch her, you coward!"

Valenti laughed wickedly, pointing his gun at Maya’s head. "You've got spirit, little waitress. But spirit doesn't stop bullets. In twenty minutes, Vincent will arrive here alone. I told him if he brings his guards, I’ll blow both your brains out. Once he steps through that door, my snipers will end the Caruso line once and for all."

"Vincent isn't stupid," Maya spat, staring him down. "He will rip you apart."

"We'll see," Valenti chuckled, turning toward the warehouse entrance as heavy footsteps echoed outside.

The heavy steel doors of the warehouse creaked open.

A single figure stepped out of the heavy fog into the dim yellow light of the warehouse. Vincent Caruso walked in alone, dressed in his ruined tuxedo, holding no visible weapons. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying vengeance.

"Vincent!" Elena cried out.

Vincent’s eyes swept across the room. He saw Elena, alive but bruised. Then his gaze fell on Maya, tied up, her lip bleeding slightly from the struggle. When his eyes landed on Maya’s injury, something horrifying flared in his gaze—a pure, unadulterated killer's fury.

"Antonio," Vincent’s voice reverberated off the metal walls like thunder. "You made a fatal mistake tonight."

"Did I?" Valenti gestured to his three armed men and pointed at the darkness above the rafters where two snipers were hidden. "You came alone, Caruso. You lose. Drop to your knees, give me control of the harbor, and maybe I’ll let one of your women live."

Vincent didn't drop to his knees. Instead, a slow, deadly smile spread across his lips.

"Who said I came alone?" Vincent asked quietly.

Suddenly, the glass skylights overhead shattered!

Tactical flashbang grenades rained down from above, exploding with deafening booms and blinding light!

"ARGH!" Valenti and his men screamed, blinded and disoriented.

Marcus Kane and a dozen heavily armed Caruso enforcers rappelled down from the roof beams on tactical ropes! Gunfire exploded instantly through the warehouse. Vincent didn't hesitate—he lunged forward like a panther, pulling a hidden pistol from his ankle holster.

BANG! BANG!

Two of Valenti’s henchmen dropped instantly. Vincent charged through the chaos straight toward Maya and Elena.

Valenti, recovering from the flashbang, raised his weapon and aimed directly at Maya’s chest! "If I die, she dies with me!"

"NO!" Vincent threw his own body in front of Maya.

BANG!

A bullet struck Vincent in the shoulder! He groaned, but didn't falter. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbing Valenti’s gun arm, twisting it until the bone snapped with a sickening crack, and slamming the mob boss onto the concrete floor!

Vincent stood over Valenti, his face covered in blood and sweat, breathing heavily, his gun pointed straight between Valenti’s eyes.

"This is for my family," Vincent growled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Vincent, wait!" Maya screamed over the gunfire, which was now dying down as Marcus’s men secured the building. "Don't do it! Don't let Ethan grow up thinking his father is just a murderer! Let the law or the council destroy him!"

Vincent stared down at Valenti, his heart pounding violently. He looked back at Maya, her wide, honest eyes pleading with him. Slowing his breath, Vincent lowered the gun, slamming the butt of it across Valenti’s jaw, knocking him unconscious.

"Secure him," Vincent ordered Marcus coldly. "Hand him over to the federal authorities with all the evidence of his extortion and kidnappings. Let him rot in a supermax prison."

Vincent dropped his gun and rushed to Maya, pulling out a knife to cut her ropes. The moment her hands were free, Maya threw her arms around Vincent’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder despite the blood on his jacket.

"You're hurt," she sobbed softly.

May you like

"I'm fine," Vincent murmured, wrapping his uninjured arm tightly around her waist, kissing her temple passionately. "I have you. You're safe."

Beside them, Marcus cut Elena’s ropes. Elena stood up slowly, looking at Vincent and Maya holding each other. Tears spilled down her pale cheeks as she realized the painful, undeniable truth: the love in Vincent’s eyes wasn't directed at her anymore. It belonged entirely to the woman who had protected their son.
