Chapter 30 - The Rising of the Sun

A month later, the warm summer breeze was blowing over the hills of Napa Valley.

We had rented a private, sun-drenched villa overlooking the endless rows of grapevines, far away from the noise, the drama, and the memories of Ohio. The air was sweet with the scent of ripening grapes and warm earth.

I stood on the stone terrace, wearing a simple white linen dress, my bare feet resting on the warm tiles. The sun was setting, casting a golden, orange glow over the valley, painting the sky in shades of fire and light.

Marcus walked out behind me, his arms sliding gently around my waist. He pulled me close, his chest warm and solid against my back. I leaned into him, letting out a long, peaceful sigh.

"You're quiet," he whispered, kissing my temple.

"I’m just thinking about how quiet the world is when you're not fighting for your life," I said, turning in his arms to look up at him.

Marcus smiled, his hands resting on my waist. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. My heart skipped a beat, a sweet, thrilling panic rising in my chest.

He opened the box, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut emerald ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of diamonds. It was vibrant, unique, and entirely different from the traditional diamond ring Daniel had once bought me with my own money.

"Evelyn," Marcus said, his voice deep and filled with emotion. "I’ve watched you fight through the darkest storms, and I’ve watched you rise like a phoenix. You are the most resilient, beautiful, and brilliant woman I have ever known. I don't want to carry your burdens, because I know you can carry them yourself. But I want to stand beside you, protect you, and love you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled my eyes, spilling over my cheeks. I looked at the ring, then at the man who had stood by me in the trauma room, in the alleyway, and in the courtroom, never once doubting my strength.

"Yes, Marcus," I whispered, my voice breaking with happiness. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

He slid the ring onto my finger, the cool metal a perfect, solid fit. He pulled me into his arms, his lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet wine, summer air, and a brand-new beginning.

The sun finally dipped below the horizon, but there was no darkness. The stars were coming out, bright and endless, lighting up the path to our future.

I was Evelyn Carter. My body was healed, my soul was free, and my story was finally, beautifully, ours.
