Chapter 23 - The Alleyway Confrontation

The drive from my penthouse to the High Street clinic took exactly seven minutes, but it felt like an eternity. The rain lashed against my windshield, the wipers scraping back and forth in a frantic, rhythmic beat. My hands were tight on the steering wheel, my knuckles white.

As I pulled onto the side street near the clinic, I turned off my headlights, letting my SUV coast quietly into the shadows.

Clara’s silver sedan was still there, tucked deep into the narrow brick alleyway. The blue light from the laptop was still glowing inside.

I parked my car, blocking the exit of the alleyway. I grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from my glove compartment—not for violence, but for protection—and stepped out into the freezing rain.

The cold water instantly soaked through my hoodie, but I barely felt it. I walked toward the silver sedan, my boots splashing quietly in the puddles.

As I reached the driver's side window, I shone the bright LED flashlight directly into the car.

Clara screamed, throwing her hands up to block the blinding light. The laptop on her lap slid onto the floorboard.

"Get out of the car, Clara," I yelled over the sound of the pouring rain.

She recovered quickly, her face contorting with a mixture of shock and sheer malice. She threw the car door open, slamming it against my legs. I stumbled back, the sharp pain in my side flaring up for a split second.

Clara scrambled out of the car, her hair wet and wild, her eyes wide with a manic, desperate energy. "You think you can control everything, Evelyn? You think you’re god because you have money?"

"You are violating a restraining order, Clara! The police are on their way!" I shouted, holding my ground.

"I don't care!" she shrieked, reaching into her car to grab the laptop. "I have it all! I have your emails with Marcus! I have the proof that you two were sleeping together while you were still married to my brother! We’re going to take you to court, Evelyn. We’re going to take every single penny back!"

"There was no affair, Clara!" I said, taking a step closer. "Marcus and I didn't start dating until months after the divorce was finalized! You’re chasing ghosts!"

"Liar!" she screamed, lunging at me.

She didn't have a weapon, but her fingers were clawed, reaching for my face. I raised my left arm to block her, my grip tightening on the heavy flashlight. Clara slammed into me, her momentum throwing us both against the wet brick wall of the clinic.

The pain in my ribs exploded as my back hit the bricks. For a second, my vision went black. I could hear Margaret’s voice echoing in my mind, the sound of the baseball bat cracking against my bones.

No. Not again.

I found a reserve of strength I didn't know I had. I grabbed Clara’s wrists, twisting them down, using my weight to pin her against the side of her car. She struggled violently, cursing at me, spitting rain and venom into my face.

"Let go of me, you immigrant trash!" she howled.

Suddenly, the alleyway was flooded with blinding white light. The siren of a police cruiser wailed, echoing off the brick walls as two patrol cars blocked the entrance.

"Columbus Police! Don't move! Put your hands on the vehicle!" a loud voice boomed through a megaphone.

Clara froze, her body going limp under my grip. She looked at the flashing red and blue lights, then at me, her face pale with the realization of her defeat.

Marcus ran into the alleyway, his coat soaked with rain, his face pale with worry. He grabbed my shoulders, pulling me gently away from Clara. "Evelyn! Are you okay? Did she hurt you?"

"I'm fine," I gasped, leaning against him, my chest heaving as I tried to catch my breath. "She didn't break anything this time."

May you like

The officers slammed Clara against the hood of her car, pulling her arms behind her back to click the handcuffs into place. As they read her her rights, she turned her head to look at me, her eyes filled with a terrifying, cold hatred.

"This isn't over, Evelyn," she whispered, her voice dripping with poison. "Daniel still has the files. He’s already sending them to the press. You’re ruined."
