Chapter 10 - The War of Public Relations

Monday morning was cold and grey, but the courtyard of the Maple Ridge County Courthouse was packed with local reporters and curious onlookers.
I stood beside Marcus, wearing a professional navy blue suit. The brace under my clothes kept my posture stiff and upright, a physical reminder of why I was standing there.
Marcus stepped up to the microphones, a stack of large, foam-board exhibits behind him.
"Good morning, everyone," Marcus began, his voice commanding and clear. "Over the past forty-eight hours, there have been numerous false allegations circulated by anonymous sources attempting to paint my client, Dr. Evelyn Carter, as a controlling and abusive spouse. Today, we are here to present the undeniable truth."
He flipped the first board, revealing a giant, simplified chart of bank transactions.
"For eight years, Dr. Carter has been the sole financial provider for not only her husband, Daniel Hale, but also her mother-in-law, Margaret Hale. As you can see from these verified bank statements, Dr. Carter transferred exactly six thousand dollars every month directly to Margaret Hale's personal account. Over eight years, this totals over five hundred and seventy-six thousand dollars."
The reporters gasped, their cameras flashing rapidly.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, flipping to the next board, "Dr. Carter paid for the extensive renovations of Margaret Hale’s home, paid her property taxes, and financed every single luxury vacation, designer handbag, and country club membership. On the night of the assault, Margaret Hale demanded an additional five thousand dollars for a shopping trip. When Dr. Carter finally said 'no,' Margaret Hale attempted to take her life with a baseball bat."
Marcus then played a snippet of the clinic security audio. Daniel’s voice rang out clearly: “Why are you doing this to us? We were a family!... We had to pawn her Chanel bags and her Rolex just to raise the twenty-five thousand... We don't have that kind of cash!”
"This is not a case of a family dispute," Marcus concluded. "This is a case of extreme financial elder abuse in reverse, followed by a brutal, life-threatening physical assault when the financial well was finally shut off. We will not be intimidated, and we will not stay silent."

As we walked back into the courthouse, the reporters swarmed us, shouting questions. But I didn't need to say a word. The look on the faces of the onlookers—many of whom were Margaret's former country club peers—told me everything.
The Hale name was officially toxic.
