Chapter 5 - The Preliminary Hearing

Three weeks later, the municipal courtroom convened for the preliminary hearing. Claire sat at the defense table in a muted gray suit alongside her mother, her former confidence replaced by an anxious, hollow quiet. Marcus Vale was notably absent; his executive board had terminated his contract four days prior after receiving federal subpoenas regarding corporate fund misdirection and co-conspiracy.
The defense counsel stood up, arguing that the video recordings were taken out of context, that the children were never in genuine danger, and that the domestic arrangements were simply a family misunderstanding amplified by marital strain.
My attorney said nothing in response. He simply pressed play on the central evidence monitor facing the bench.
The court watched in silence as the high-definition footage played out on the screen: Diane shoving Noah into Lily’s arms while the girl cried from pain; Claire putting on red lipstick while telling her daughter not to call her father; Marcus leaning against the kitchen counter; and finally, Claire looking directly into the camera lens with a smile, uttering the words: "By the time Daniel figures anything out, the accounts will already be empty."

The presiding judge reached forward, paused the video, and lowered her glasses. Looking down at the defense table, her tone was icy and resolute.
"In my sixteen years presiding over domestic and criminal matters, I have rarely witnessed such explicit, documented disregard for the physical well-being of young children," the judge stated. "Bail for both defendants is hereby revoked, and this matter is immediately referred for prosecution on charges of felony child endangerment and criminal fraud."
