Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

Within twenty minutes, my phone began ringing incessantly. Twenty unanswered calls from Claire were followed by a barrage of increasingly hostile text messages from Diane, accusing me of playing mind games. On the twenty-first attempt, I picked up the line, keeping my tone measured, quiet, and absolutely flat.

"Daniel! Where the hell are you? What kind of sick prank is this?" Claire shrieked into the microphone. "Why aren't the kids in their beds? Did you break in and take my children?"

"They are currently admitted to the pediatric care unit at St. Jude’s," I answered without hesitation. "Lily is undergoing treatment for physical trauma to her back caused by holding an infant for over five hours straight. The attending nurse has already filed a mandated report with child protective services."

A heavy silence fell over the line before Diane’s sharp, frantic voice intruded from the speakerphone. "You're out of your mind, Daniel! I was at the house all evening! Lily is making things up—she spilled the milk, threw a tantrum, and hid!"

"I don't need Lily's testimony, Diane," I said softly. "I have the 4K local backups from the hallway, the kitchen, and the front porch. Including Marcus Vale's arrival at 6:02 p.m., your discussion regarding the empty bank accounts, and the exact moment you handed an eleven-kilogram infant to a seven-year-old child and walked out the door."

The call disconnected instantly.
