Chapter 6 - A Place in the Sun

One year later.
Spring had arrived in Boston. The cherry blossoms along the Charles River were in full bloom, casting soft pink petals across the green grass.
At Harbor House in Dorchester, the afternoon sun shone brightly through newly installed, beautiful stained-glass windows. The center had been completely renovated—featuring a brand-new playground, a state-of-the-art computer lab, and a spacious dining hall where children were served fresh, hot meals every day.
Outside on the green lawn, dozens of children were playing tag, their laughter filling the warm spring air.
Claire Bennett stood on the porch, holding a clipboard, watching the kids play. She wore a bright floral dress, her dark auburn hair catching the golden sunlight.
A sleek black sedan pulled up quietly to the curb.
The door opened, and Dominic Vale stepped out.
He wasn't wearing his dark mafia suits anymore. Today, he wore a casual navy sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, healthy, and deeply at peace.
"Mr. Quiet!"
Sophie came running across the grass at top speed. Now six years old, she wore a bright blue summer dress with a daisy tucked behind her ear.
Dominic caught her effortlessly in his arms, swinging her high up into the air as she giggled with pure joy.
"Look how fast you're getting," Dominic laughed gently, setting her down on her feet.
"Mommy said we're having ice cream after school today!" Sophie announced proudly. "Are you coming with us?"
"If your mother says it's okay," Dominic smiled, looking up toward the porch.
Claire walked down the wooden steps, a warm, beautiful smile lighting up her face as she approached them.
Over the past year, Dominic had stepped down from active leadership of the syndicate, converting Vale Holdings into a legitimate global investment firm and philanthropy foundation. The violence of his past was entirely gone, replaced by a life dedicated to protecting the people he loved.
"You're late," Claire teased gently, stepping close to him.
"Traffic on the bridge," Dominic replied, reaching out to wrap his arm around her waist, drawing her close for a soft, affectionate kiss on the cheek.
Claire leaned into his shoulder, her hand resting over his heart.
"Noah called earlier," Claire said softly. "He said the new center in South Boston opens next week."
"I know," Dominic smiled, looking around the peaceful courtyard filled with happy children. "My father would have hated seeing all this money spent on parks and playgrounds."
"No," Claire said softly, looking up into his dark brown eyes. "I think your father would be prouder of you today than he ever was."
Sophie ran back over, grabbing Dominic's right hand and Claire's left hand, pulling them toward the ice cream truck parked down the street.
"Come on, slowpokes!" Sophie called out happily. "The sun is shining!"

Dominic looked down at the tiny fingers wrapped around his own—the same little hand that had reached out to him in a dark chapel when he was lost in grief and vengeance.
He squeezed her hand gently and walked forward into the bright, warm sunlight.
