Chapter 5 - Midnight at the Docks

At 11:30 PM, thick fog rolled off Boston Harbor, enveloping Pier 42 in a heavy gray shroud.

Inside an abandoned shipping warehouse at the edge of the docks, Mateo Moretti—the ruthless fifty-year-old leader of the Moretti family—sat on a wooden crate, smoking a cigar. Surrounding him were twenty heavily armed mercenaries carrying assault rifles.

"He'll come alone," Mateo sneered to his second-in-command. "Dominic Vale is soft. He spent the last five years arguing with his old man instead of running the family. When he hears we have his little secret niece in our sights, he'll hand over the shipping docks without a fight."

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the warehouse blew inward with a violent shockwave.

BOOM!

Flashbang grenades detonated across the interior, blinding the mercenaries with deafening light and sound.

Before the smoke could clear, shadow-clad men flooded through the high windows and side doors—the elite tactical wing of Vale Holdings.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

A fierce, chaotic firefight erupted through the fog. The Moretti mercenaries were cut down with terrifying speed and precision.

Mateo panicked, dropping his cigar and reaching for his sidearm, but a shadow moved through the smoke faster than human reaction.

A heavy boot kicked the gun from Mateo's hand.

Dominic Vale emerged from the fog, wearing a dark tactical coat, his pistol raised. His face was emotionless, his eyes burning with a dark, unyielding authority.

Within two minutes, every Moretti gunman lay disarmed on the floor or unconscious. Mateo was forced onto his knees, his hands bound behind his back.

Dominic stepped forward, looking down at the shivering crime boss.

"Vale! Please!" Mateo gasped, sweat dripping down his pale forehead. "It was just business! We wanted the docks! We weren't going to hurt the kid!"

"You sent armed men into a room full of children, Mateo," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You broke the oldest rule in this city."

Dominic pulled a legal document from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the wooden crate beside Mateo.

"What... what is this?" Mateo stammered.

"It's a full transfer of all Moretti family assets, properties, and shipping lines to Vale Holdings," Dominic stated coldly. "Sign it, and you leave Boston tonight on a boat to Europe, never to return. Refuse... and you disappear into the harbor tonight."

Mateo looked into Dominic's eyes and saw no hesitation, no mercy, and no doubt.

With trembling, blood-stained fingers, Mateo grabbed the pen and signed his name at the bottom of the page.

Dominic picked up the paper, handed it to Noah, and turned his back on the disgraced crime boss.

"Get him out of my city," Dominic ordered Noah.

As Dominic walked out of the smoke-filled warehouse into the cool night air, Noah walked alongside him.

"What about the rest of the syndicate, Dominic?" Noah asked. "You now control every dock, every territory, and every asset in New England. You have absolute power."

Dominic stopped at the edge of the pier, looking out over the quiet ocean waters toward the city lights.

"Transfer fifty percent of the Moretti assets into a permanent, blind charitable trust," Dominic commanded softly. "Fund Harbor House for the next fifty years. Build three more centers across Massachusetts."

Noah stared at him in disbelief. "Sir... that's tens of millions of dollars."

Dominic pulled his father's handwritten note from his pocket, reading the final sentence one last time:

Then decide what kind of man you intend to become.

May you like

Dominic folded the note and put it away forever.

"My father spent his life building an empire of fear," Dominic said softly. "I'm going to spend mine making sure Sophie never has to be afraid."
