Chapter 2 - The Secret Bloodline

The quiet office at the back of Harbor House was lined with children's books and medical charts. Outside the window, rain rattled against the glass.
Dominic sat in a wooden chair that felt far too small for him. Opposite him, Claire sat behind her desk, holding a warm cup of tea she hadn't touched.
"Your father kept Danielle hidden," Claire explained, her voice solemn. "When your mother died thirty years ago, her sister severed all ties with the Vale family. She wanted nothing to do with the mob, the violence, or the money. She raised Danielle in secret, telling her never to look for her rich relatives in Boston."
Dominic listened, his jaw locked tight. "Then how did my father find her?"
"He didn't find Danielle until she was dying in a hospital bed five years ago," Claire said softly. "Danielle had severe heart failure. She called me—her best friend—to take baby Sophie. But on the day Danielle died, an old man in a black coat showed up in her room."
Claire looked directly into Dominic's eyes.
"It was Vincent Vale. He stood over Danielle's bed, tears in his eyes. He begged her to let him take Sophie to raise her in the Vale estate. But Danielle refused. She told him that the Vale name brought only blood and misery. She made him promise on his soul that he would never bring Sophie into his world."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Dominic closed his eyes as the realization crushed him.
His father—the cold, ruthless patriarch who had ordered hits and built a criminal empire—had humbled himself before a dying young woman. He had respected her final wish, choosing to protect Sophie from afar rather than dragging her into the violent shadows of the Vale family.
"He wanted to protect her," Dominic murmured softly, opening his eyes. "That's why he routed the money through shell companies. If my syndicate's enemies ever found out Vincent Vale had a granddaughter... a blood relative..."
"...They would have used her as leverage," Claire finished the sentence for him. "Your father knew what kind of world he built. He knew that the safest place for Sophie was right here, in obscurity, raised by a normal school counselor who loved her."
Dominic looked through the glass window of the office. Out in the playroom, Sophie was building a tower out of wooden blocks, humming a silly song to herself.
Try to understand it before you judge me, his father's letter had read. Then decide what kind of man you intend to become.
"He called me seven times from his deathbed," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "I thought he wanted to talk about business... about who would inherit the syndicate. I refused to take his calls because I hated what he made me become."
"He didn't want to talk about business, Dominic," Claire said gently. "He wanted to tell you about her. He wanted to make sure his son would protect her when he was gone."
Suddenly, the heavy glass door at the front entrance of the center shattered with a deafening crash.
Screams echoed down the hallway.

Dominic reacted instantly. He stood up, drawing a compact semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster before Claire could even process the sound.
"Stay here!" Dominic commanded, rushing toward the playroom.
