Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Estate

It was a crisp winter evening. Alessandro had invited Sophia and Emma to his private estate on Long Island for an intimate dinner to celebrate Emma’s seventh birthday. For the first time in decades, the grand, imposing mansion felt like a home, filled with the warmth of laughter, the scent of fresh vanilla cake, and bright pink decorations.
Emma was upstairs in the playroom, admiring a custom wooden dollhouse Alessandro had spent weeks hand-carving himself.
Downstairs in the library, Alessandro poured two glasses of wine, handing one to Sophia.
"I haven't seen you smile like this in a long time," Sophia said softly, stepping closer to him, her hand gently brushing his arm.
Alessandro looked down at her, his dark eyes brimming with an emotion he had long thought dead. He reached up, cupping her cheek gently. "That’s because I’ve never had a reason to smile like this before, Sophia. You and Emma... you brought me back to life."
Before Sophia could answer, the glass windows of the library shattered into a million pieces.
Heavy gunfire erupted outside. Sirens blared as the estate's security system shrieked into the night.
"Get down!" Alessandro roared, throwing his body over Sophia, shielding her as wooden splinters and plaster rained down around them.
Marco burst into the library, his gun drawn, bleeding from a graze on his forehead. "Boss! It’s Falcone’s men! They cut the main gate power! They’re inside the perimeter!"
Sophia gasped in terror, her face draining of color. "Emma! She’s upstairs!"
"Marco, cover the stairwell!" Alessandro commanded, his voice transforming instantly into the lethal, decisive tone of a mafia Don. He reached into the hidden compartment under the mahogany desk, pulling out two heavy pistols.
"Alessandro, please!" Sophia cried, grabbing his lapel.
"Stay behind me," Alessandro said, his eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying resolve. "Nobody touches my family."
He moved like a phantom through the grand hallways of the estate. When two of Falcone’s gunmen rounded the corner near the upper stairs, Alessandro raised his weapons with ruthless precision, neutralizing the threats before they could fire a single shot.
He kicked open the door to the playroom. Falcone’s top lieutenant had grabbed Emma, holding her struggling body as a human shield. Behind him stood Isabella, her eyes wide with unhinged malice.
"Put the guns down, Alessandro!" Isabella shrieked. "Or he breaks her neck!"
Emma looked at Alessandro, her small eyes wide with fear, but she didn't scream. "Mr. Alessandro..."
Alessandro slowly lowered his weapons, his expression completely blank, hiding the cold rage surging through his veins. "Isabella. This is between us. Let the child go."
"You ruined my life!" Isabella screamed, her voice echoing off the walls. "You threw me out like trash for this peasant and her daughter! Now you’re going to watch them die!"
"I don't think so," a quiet voice spoke from behind the hallway curtains.
Marco stepped out silently, raising his rifle. A single, suppressed shot echoed through the room. Falcone’s lieutenant collapsed instantly.
In that split second of chaos, Alessandro lunged forward, grabbing Emma and pulling her safely into his arms, sheltering her face against his chest. Isabella backed away in terror, stumbling into Marco, who promptly disarmed her and forced her to her knees.
The gunfight outside died down as the rest of Moretti’s security forces neutralized the remaining attackers.
Alessandro knelt on the floor, holding Emma tightly. Sophia ran into the room, collapsing beside them, throwing her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Are you okay, baby? Are you hurt?" Sophia panicked, checking Emma’s arms and face.
Emma shook her head, burying her face into Alessandro’s sweater, her little hands gripping his clothes tightly. "I knew Mr. Alessandro wouldn't let the bad people hurt us."

Alessandro kissed the top of Emma’s head, his hands trembling as he held her close. He looked at Sophia, his eyes filled with a fiercely protective love.
"It’s over," Alessandro promised softly. "I swear to you, it’s over forever."
