Chapter 2 - A Hand in the Dark

Three weeks had passed since the incident in Central Park.

Sophia Rossi stood in the kitchen of her tiny, cramped apartment in Queens, scrubbing dishes under a sputtering faucet. The radiator clanked rhythmically, doing little to block out the cold autumn wind whipping against the cracked windowpane.

Despite winning the prestigious scholarship to St. Jude’s, life hadn't gotten easier. The scholarship covered tuition, but the required uniforms, specialized textbooks, and daily transportation costs were far beyond what Sophia made cleaning luxury high-rises in Manhattan. To make matters worse, her building’s landlord had just announced an unexpected rent hike.

"Mommy?" Emma’s small voice called out from the tiny dining table where her homework was laid out. "Do I really have to wear the leather shoes to the new school? My old sneakers still fit if I scrunch my toes."

Sophia dried her hands on a frayed towel and walked over, kissing the top of Emma’s head. "No scrunching toes, my sweet girl. Mommy will find a way. I’m taking an extra night shift at the hotel downtown. We’ll be just fine."

Suddenly, three heavy knocks echoed off the apartment door.

Sophia froze. The neighborhood wasn't safe at night, and she wasn't expecting anyone. She motioned for Emma to stay seated, picked up a heavy iron skillet from the stove, and walked cautiously toward the door.

"Who is it?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"Mrs. Rossi," a deep, respectful voice called back through the thin wood. "My name is Marco. I represent Mr. Alessandro Moretti. May we speak for a moment?"

Sophia’s heart hammered against her ribs. The man with the tattoo. She remembered his commanding presence, his dark suit, and the unmistakable air of danger that surrounded him in the park.

"We don't want any trouble," Sophia called out, keeping the door locked. "I don't know who you people are."

"There is no trouble, ma'am," the voice replied smoothly. "Mr. Moretti simply wishes to return something that belongs to your daughter."

Sophia hesitated, then unlocked the deadbolt, keeping the heavy door on its security chain.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Marco, holding a sleek, midnight-blue velvet box tied with a silk ribbon. Beside him stood Alessandro Moretti himself, stripped of his heavy mafia aura, wearing a simple navy sweater and dark trousers. He looked tired, but his eyes were soft as he looked down at Sophia through the narrow opening.

"Mrs. Rossi," Alessandro said quietly, stepping forward so she could see his hands were empty. "Forgive the late hour. I didn't mean to frighten you."

"What do you want?" Sophia asked, her hand still white-knuckled around the skillet behind the door.

"Emma dropped her scholarship medal on the grass three weeks ago," Alessandro explained, holding up the velvet box. "I had my men find it. And... I wanted to ensure she was able to attend the school without burden."
