Chapter 1 - Shadows in Central Park

Alessandro walked away from the stone bench, his polished shoes crunching heavy on the gravel path. Behind him, Isabella’s desperate cries slowly dissolved into the hum of Manhattan traffic. But as he reached his bulletproof black SUV parked near the park perimeter, he didn't feel the cold satisfaction of revenge. He only felt an echoing emptiness.

His trusted lieutenant, Marco, stepped out of the vehicle, opening the back door while keeping a hand casually resting near the holster inside his jacket.

"Boss," Marco said softly, noticing the damp tracks on Alessandro’s cheeks—a sight he had never witnessed in fifteen years of service. "The capos are waiting at the estate. The wedding preparations... do we cancel the caterers?"

"Cancel everything," Alessandro commanded, his voice cold and steady once more. "The wedding is dead. Tell the inner circle that Isabella Valenti is no longer protected by the Moretti family name. Strip her of the apartment, the credit lines, and the security detail. By nightfall, I want her gone from my sight."

Marco nodded grimly. "And the man from Brooklyn? The father?"

Alessandro’s eyes hardened into steel. "Find out who he is. If he is working for a rival family, I want to know why Isabella was used as a Trojan horse inside my home. If he’s just a foolish civilian, pay him to leave New York and never return. I have no heart for bloodshed over a woman who meant nothing to me."

As the SUV pulled into the chaotic flow of Fifth Avenue, Alessandro looked out the tinted window. His eyes drifted back toward the trees of Central Park. He couldn't shake the warm, weightless memory of Emma’s tiny arms wrapped around his coat, or the cautious, fierce protectiveness in her mother’s tired eyes.

Sophia Rossi.

He remembered her name. He remembered the faded white housekeeper's uniform and the way she held her daughter as if Emma were the only precious thing in a harsh, forgiving city.

"Marco," Alessandro spoke up suddenly.

"Yes, Boss?"

"St. Jude’s Academy for Girls—the private elementary school near the Upper East Side. Find out who won their top merit scholarship today. I want a full profile on a girl named Emma Rossi and her mother, Sophia."

Marco looked through the rearview mirror, surprised by the unusual request. "Are they a threat, sir?"

Alessandro looked down at his wool coat, where a faint smudge of dust from Emma’s shoes still marked his lapel. A tiny, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.

"No, Marco," he whispered. "They are the only real thing I've seen all year."
