Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

Mateo didn't hesitate. He raised the wooden club high above his head and stood right beside the door frame.

The door pushed open quietly. A figure stepped into the dim room wearing a nurse’s uniform, carrying a medical tray. But as the light caught the figure's face, Mateo recognized the cold, sharp features beneath the surgical mask.

It wasn't a nurse. It was Rebeca.

Before she could raise the syringe she held in her right hand, Mateo slammed the heavy wooden club down onto her wrist. She shrieked as the syringe flew across the room, shattering against the wall.

Mateo grabbed her by the collar and pinned her violently against the wall, his eyes dark with fury. "You came here to hurt my son again?!"

"No! No! Mateo, listen to me!" Rebeca sobbed frantically, clutching her bruised wrist. "Eduardo has gone crazy! He bribed one of the floor officers! He’s downstairs in the garage right now with two armed men! He told me if I didn't silence Emiliano so he couldn't testify, he would kill me and my own children!"

"You sacrificed my son once to save yourself!" Mateo growled, tightening his grip. "Why should I believe a single word coming out of your mouth?!"

"Because he’s going to kill us all!" Rebeca begged, her tears washing away her clinical disguise. "He doesn't care about me anymore! He realized the police are tracking his accounts. He's burning everything down! He sent me up here as a distraction so his men could cut the hospital power and come up the stairwell!"

Suddenly, the overhead lights slammed off, plunging the hospital room into pitch darkness.

The emergency backup generators whirred to life seconds later, casting an eerie red glow through the hallways. The emergency alarm began to blare.

Laura screamed, pulling Emiliano and Jimena into the bathroom and locking the heavy door behind them.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the hallway—heavy, deliberate, tactical boots.

Mateo shoved Rebeca to the floor. "Stay down if you want to live."

Eduardo stepped into the doorway, flanked by a tall, heavily tattooed man holding a suppressed pistol. Eduardo looked disheveled, his eyes wild and unhinged.

"End of the line, Mateo," Eduardo sneered, raising his weapon. "You just had to keep digging, didn't you? If you had left the floor alone, everyone would have survived."

"You're a monster, Eduardo," Mateo said, standing tall, refusing to back away from the barrel pointed at his chest.

May you like

"Maybe," Eduardo smirked. "But I'm a living monster."

Before Eduardo could pull the trigger, Rebeca screamed and lunged from the floor, throwing all her weight against Eduardo’s knees. He stumbled backward, his gun firing wildly into the ceiling.
