Chapter 2 - The Standoff and the Escape

"Eduardo, put the gun down!" Rebeca screamed, scrambling to her feet. "It's over! They found him!"

"Shut up, Rebeca!" Eduardo snarled, his eyes darting frantically toward the front window to check for police. "If Mateo goes out that door with the boy, we both go to federal prison for life. Do you think they care about your excuses? Hand the boy over, Mateo. Now."

Mateo backed up slowly, positioning himself between Eduardo’s gun and the children. Emiliano hid his face in Mateo's neck, shivering, while Jimena clung tightly to Mateo’s leg.

"You touch my children, Eduardo, and I will kill you with my bare hands," Mateo said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper.

"You're in no position to bargain," Eduardo stepped forward, raising the weapon.

In that fraction of a second, Mateo acted. He picked up the heavy ceramic vase from the nearby side table and hurled it directly at Eduardo’s head. Eduardo dodged reflexively, and the vase shattered against the wall behind him. The sudden distraction was all Mateo needed. He kicked the heavy coffee table straight into Eduardo’s shins, sending the man crashing to the tile floor. The gun flew out of his hand, skidding across the polished floor toward the open kitchen.

"Run!" Mateo shouted.

He scooped up Jimena with his free arm and bolted out the front door, carrying both children down the driveway. Behind him, he heard Rebeca screaming and Eduardo cursing as he scrambled to regain his footing.

Mateo sprinted through the manicured streets of the gated community. He reached his SUV, slammed the children into the backseat, locked the doors, and slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing through the neighborhood security gate and smashing right through the plastic barrier arm.

He drove like a man possessed, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, his eyes constantly checking the rearview mirror.

"Daddy," Emiliano murmured weakly from the backseat, his voice barely a rasp. "Mommy... is Mommy waiting?"

Tears poured down Mateo’s cheeks as he looked at his son through the mirror. "Yes, my brave boy. Mommy is waiting. You're safe now. I swear to you, you're safe."

Mateo pulled out his phone, set it to speaker, and dialed his wife, Laura.

She picked up on the second ring. "Mateo? Where are you? You left Rebeca's so abruptly—"

"Laura," Mateo choked out, trying to keep his vehicle steady as he sped down the highway toward the center of Querétaro. "Listen to me very carefully. Sit down."

"Mateo, what's wrong? You're scaring me!"

"I have him, Laura. I have Emiliano. He’s alive. He's in the car with me."

A heavy, breathless silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds, followed by a sharp, shattered gasp. "What... what did you say?"

"Rebeca took him," Mateo said, his voice laced with venom. "She and Eduardo held him. We have him now. Meet us at Santa Rosa Hospital immediately. Call the police. Tell them to send every armed unit they have to Rebeca's house!"
