Chapter 1 - The Broken Floor and the Unthinkable Truth

The splintered oak gave way under the sheer force of Mateo’s desperate fury. Dust, dry cement powder, and the suffocating scent of trapped dampness spilled into the sterile air of Rebeca’s pristine living room. Beneath the elegant floorboards lay a narrow, hastily constructed void—a hidden crawl space built into the home's foundation.

Through the opening, a tiny, trembling hand grasped Mateo’s fingers.

"Emiliano..." Mateo gasped, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. He dropped the iron poker, ignoring the jagged wood digging into his knees. He reached deep into the shadow, his hands meeting thin, fragile arms, a tiny chest rising and falling in rapid, terrified gasps, and a dirty, oversized t-shirt.

He pulled his seven-year-old son out of the pit.

Emiliano was pale, hollow-cheeked, and trembling violently, his eyes squinting painfully against the bright living room light. He was weak, but he was alive. Mateo clutched the boy to his chest, weeping uncontrollably, burying his face in his son's dusty hair. Little Jimena crawled over, throwing her small arms around them both, whispering, "I told you, Daddy. I heard him."

Across the room, Rebeca was frozen on her knees, her face drained of all color. The polished, perfect facade she had cultivated for years had utterly collapsed.

"Mateo... please, let me explain," Rebeca whimpered, her voice shaking violently. "It wasn't... I never wanted to hurt him! You have to listen to me!"

Mateo turned to her, his eyes blazing with an absolute, terrifying rage. He held Emiliano securely in one arm while shielding Jimena with the other. "Explain? You kept my son under your floor?! You sat in our house while Laura destroyed herself with grief, and you knew he was alive?!"

"He wasn't under the floor the whole time!" Rebeca cried out, tears streaming down her carefully applied makeup. "I took him that day in Coyoacán... because of the money, Mateo! Eduardo owes millions to dangerous people! They threatened to kill us, to kill my kids! They told me to kidnap a rich family's child for ransom, but I couldn't do that to a stranger. I thought... I thought if I took Emiliano, I could ask for a quiet payment from Dad's inheritance trust, pay Eduardo's debt, and then 'find' Emiliano unharmed!"

"You kidnapped my son for money?!" Mateo yelled, the sound echoing off the high ceilings.

"It went wrong!" Rebeca sobbed, pressing her hands to her head. "Eduardo got arrested for fraud two months ago! The men came looking for me! I panicked. I couldn't bring Emiliano home without going to prison for the rest of my life. So I kept him hidden at Eduardo's country cabin. But last week, the police started asking questions about Eduardo's properties. I had nowhere else to put him! I built the space under the floor three months ago just in case... I was going to move him out of the country this weekend! I swear I fed him! I gave him toys!"

"You treated him like a secret to be buried!" Mateo stood up, his body trembling with adrenaline.

Suddenly, the front door clicked open. Rebeca’s husband, Eduardo, stepped inside holding a bag of groceries. He froze, his gaze darting from the smashed floorboards to Mateo holding Emiliano, and finally to Rebeca sobbing on her knees.

Eduardo didn't ask questions. His face turned stone cold. He dropped the groceries, reached into his jacket, and pulled out a sleek black handgun.

"Nobody leaves," Eduardo said, pointing the barrel straight at Mateo. "Rebeca, get up. We’re leaving now, and we’re taking the kid."
