Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

"Take him to the cellar," Alessandro commanded.

"No! Alessandro, wait!" Lorenzo shrieked as Viktor grabbed him by the shoulder, spinning him around and forcing his hands behind his back. "I was forced into it! They threatened me! The Russian syndicate—they had my debts! If I didn't give them access to your estate, they were going to kill me!"

"You chose your life over mine," Alessandro said coldly, watching his brother get dragged out of the drawing room, his desperate screams fading down the dark, stone corridors of the estate's lower levels.

The lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, dropped to his knees on the marble floor, his hands raised in surrender. "Mr. Duca! Please! I knew nothing about the poison! I only drafted the corporate papers for the Panama shell company! I swear on my children's lives!"

Alessandro looked down at the sniveling attorney with pure disgust. "You will surrender every document, every email, and every bank record tied to my brother's accounts to Dr. Vance and Viktor. If a single page is missing, you will join Lorenzo in the cellar."

"Yes, sir! Immediately, sir!" Pendelton sobbed, scrambling to pull his briefcase open.

Alessandro turned away from the chaos, stepping out of the drawing room and walking down the grand hallway toward the west wing. The threat inside his house had been neutralized, but the broader war was just beginning. The syndicate networks that had facilitated the poison trade needed to be dismantled, piece by piece.

He reached the guest suite and knocked softly.

Sophia opened the door. She looked exhausted, but the sight of Alessandro standing unharmed brought a look of profound relief to her face.

"Is it over, sir?" she asked softly.

"The person responsible has been caught," Alessandro assured her. "You and Emma are safe. My men are preparing the transport to take you to Boston tonight. You will have a full security team stationed at your new home twenty-four hours a day."

Sophia looked at him, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude. "I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Duca. We came here just looking for a way to survive... and you gave us a future."

"You gave me my life," Alessandro replied softly.

He walked into the room and knelt down in front of little Emma, who was sitting on the rug, busy drawing a picture of a sun with bright yellow crayons.

Alessandro pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket and laid it on the rug beside her drawing.

Emma stopped coloring and looked at the box, then at Alessandro. "What's that?"

"Open it," Alessandro smiled gently.

Emma used her small fingers to flip open the velvet lid. Inside lay a delicate silver necklace featuring a tiny, sparkling diamond pendant shaped like a guardian angel's wing.

"It's a shield," Alessandro explained softly. "To protect a brave little girl who saved a king."

Emma’s eyes lit up with joy. She pulled the necklace out of the box and handed it to her mother. "Mommy, put it on me!"

As Sophia fastened the delicate silver chain around her daughter's neck, Emma wrapped her tiny arms around Alessandro's neck, giving the terrifying crime lord a warm, innocent hug.

Alessandro held the child gently, pressing a soft kiss against her hair, feeling the heavy burden of his cold, violent world melt away for just a brief moment.
