Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The west wing guest suite was larger than any home Sophia Alvarez had ever stepped foot in. The high ceilings were adorned with intricate crown molding, and the king-sized bed was covered in Egyptian cotton sheets.

Yet, Sophia couldn't relax. She sat on the edge of a plush velvet sofa, holding Emma tightly in her lap, her eyes glued to the heavy oak door. She expected the worst. She knew who Alessandro Duca was. The news called him a reclusive tech billionaire and real estate mogul, but the streets of New York knew the truth: he was the head of the Duca empire, a man whose word was law in the underground world.

The door opened with a soft click.

Sophia flinched, clutching Emma closer.

Alessandro walked into the room alone. He had shed his dark suit jacket, wearing only his white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark tattoos of ancient Roman shields wrapped around his muscular arms.

He didn't look like a ruthless crime lord right now. He looked like a man carrying an immense weight.

"Mr. Duca," Sophia squeaked out, her voice trembling.

"Sit down, Sophia," Alessandro said gently, taking a seat on the leather armchair across from her. He looked at little Emma, who was staring at him with large, curious hazel eyes, still holding her gray rabbit.

"Are you going to hurt my mommy?" Emma asked innocently, her voice echoing in the quiet room.

Sophia gasped. "Emma! Hush!"

Alessandro smiled—a rare, genuine warmth breaking through his rugged features. "No, little one. I am never going to hurt your mommy. In fact, I am here to make sure nobody ever hurts either of you again."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Sophia, your husband didn't die of a heart attack."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "I knew it... I knew Julian was murdered."

"He discovered an illegal supply chain of chemical weapons being diverted from his plant," Alessandro explained grimly. "The same people who killed your husband eighteen months ago are the ones who tried to poison my coffee this morning. They thought they could erase Julian's death as a tragic accident, and they thought they could eliminate me without leaving a trace."

"Who are they?" Sophia wept. "Why would anyone want to hurt Julian? He was just a chemist!"

"Your husband was an honest man surrounded by wolves," Alessandro said softly. "And because he was honest, they killed him. But today, his three-year-old daughter paid them back."

Alessandro reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, gold fountain pen and a thick white card. He wrote a few lines on the paper and set it on the glass coffee table between them.

"Starting today," Alessandro declared, his voice filled with absolute authority, "you and Emma are under my personal protection. You will no longer work as a housekeeper. I am transferring ownership of a secure townhouse in Boston to your name. A trust fund of five million dollars has been set up for Emma’s education and future."

Sophia stared at the paper in disbelief, her jaw dropping. "Mr. Duca... I can't accept this... I'm just a servant..."

"You are the mother of the girl who saved my life," Alessandro corrected her, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "In my world, loyalty and debts of blood are paid in full. You saved me, Sophia. Now it is my duty to protect you."

Before Sophia could answer, Viktor stepped quickly into the room, holding a encrypted tablet. His face was grim.

"Boss," Viktor interrupted. "Your brother, Lorenzo, just arrived at the front gate. He says he heard there was a security breach and brought his personal legal team."

Alessandro stood up, his warm expression instantly hardening back into dark granite.

Lorenzo. His younger half-brother, who managed the family's corporate holdings in Manhattan and had been pushing for months to liquidate the estate's private security division.

Alessandro looked down at Emma one last time. "Stay here with your mother, little one. I have a snake to catch."
