Chapter 4 - The Viper at the Table

The grand drawing room of the Duca estate was bathed in shadow. Outside, thunder clapped across the rain-soaked sky, lighting up the tall stained-glass windows in brief, violent flashes of blue.

Lorenzo Duca stood near the marble fireplace, swirling a glass of crystal bourbon. He was thirty-two, sharply dressed in an Italian silk suit, his slicked-back hair and manicured beard giving him the appearance of a sleek corporate shark. Beside him stood his chief legal counsel, a pale man named Arthur Pendelton.

"Lorenzo," Alessandro’s voice echoed from the grand entrance.

Lorenzo turned quickly, putting on a worried, concerned smile as his older brother walked into the room, flanked by Viktor and Marco.

"Alessandro! Thank God you’re alright!" Lorenzo exclaimed, stepping forward with his hand outstretched. "I came as soon as I heard the radio silence from your security detail! The guards at the gate wouldn't even let my men through at first! What on earth happened here?"

Alessandro didn't shake his brother's hand. He walked past him, stepping up to the bar, and poured himself a glass of water.

"Someone put a toxic compound into my morning espresso," Alessandro said casually, taking a slow drink.

Lorenzo’s eyes widened in dramatic horror. "What?! Poison?! In your own home?! Christ, Alessandro, I told you that kitchen staff couldn't be trusted! Who was it? Was it the new chef?"

"It was the chef," Alessandro replied smoothly. "He was paid four million dollars by an offshore account tied to a chemical distribution firm in Newark."

Lorenzo froze for a fraction of a second. The glass in his hand wobbled slightly before he caught himself, taking a quick sip to cover his hesitation. "Newark? That’s... that’s absurd. Why would a chemical firm target you?"

"Because eighteen months ago," Alessandro continued, walking slowly toward his brother, "that same chemical firm diverted twelve canisters of a rare organophosphate compound. A technician named Julian Alvarez noticed the missing inventory. Before he could report it to the authorities, he was murdered with a dose of the very same poison."

Lorenzo’s face paled slightly, though he kept his aristocratic smile firmly in place. "Fascinating story, brother. But what does a dead technician in New Jersey have to do with you?"

"It has everything to do with me, Lorenzo," Alessandro said, stopping just two feet away from him. "Because three months ago, you quietly acquired forty-nine percent of that chemical facility through a shell company registered in Panama."

The silence in the room became absolute.

Arthur Pendelton, the lawyer, took a subtle step back toward the door, but Marco immediately blocked his path, crossing his massive arms over his chest.

Lorenzo’s smile finally vanished. The polished corporate veneer dropped, revealing the cold, desperate eyes beneath.

"You've been spying on my private investments?" Lorenzo hissed, his voice dropping its warm tone.

"I don't need to spy on you, brother," Alessandro said quietly. "I manage this family. I know every dollar that leaves our accounts. You were broke, Lorenzo. You lost fifty million dollars in a bad crypto-mining venture in Eastern Europe. You were desperate. So you teamed up with the syndicate buyers, stolen industrial poisons, and sold them on the black market."

"You don't have proof of any of this!" Lorenzo sneered, his hands shaking as he set his bourbon glass on the mantle. "You're paranoid! You've been sitting in this mansion for too long, seeing ghosts in every corner!"

"I don't need proof for a court of law, Lorenzo," Alessandro whispered, leaning in close so only his brother could hear. "This isn't a courtroom. This is my house."

Alessandro nodded to Viktor.

Viktor stepped forward, holding a sleek black laptop. He flipped it open, displaying a live audio transcript and a bank transfer log linking Lorenzo's personal phone number directly to Chef Henri's offshore Cayman account.

Lorenzo stared at the screen. His knees went weak. "Alessandro... please... we’re brothers! Same father!"

"Our father taught us one rule above all else," Alessandro said, his dark eyes burning with deadly authority. "Never betray your own blood. You broke that rule the moment you put poison in my cup."
