Chapter 8 - THE SHOCKING TRUTH

Tires screeched across the park gravel as four unmarked police cruisers slammed into position, surrounding the gazebo.

Undercover officers surged forward with drawn weapons. "DROP TO THE GROUND! NOW!"

Marcus’s face transformed from smug triumph to sheer terror. He dropped the envelope, trying to turn and sprint toward the trees, but two officers tackled him heavily onto the grass, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Marcus Cole, you are under arrest for extortion, attempted child trafficking, and felony coercion!" Detective Miller announced, reading him his rights as Marcus screamed curses into the dirt.

Back at the house, my phone rang at 10:20 AM.

I snatched it off the counter so fast I almost dropped it. "James?! Are you okay?!"

"It's over, Sarah," James’s voice came through the speaker, breathless, emotional, but soaring with triumph. "They got him. He took the envelope on camera. The police arrested him."

I collapsed onto the kitchen chair, sobbing hysterically with relief as Martha cheered, pulling the boys into a massive group hug.

However, the drama was far from over.

Three hours later, Detective Miller called James and me into the precinct for an urgent update regarding Marcus's processing.

We sat across from the detective in his office.

"We ran Marcus Cole’s fingerprints through the federal system," Detective Miller said, leaning forward on his desk with a strange, serious expression. "And we discovered something very important."

"What is it?" James asked, frowning.

"Marcus Cole isn't Daisy's biological father," Detective Miller revealed smoothly.

I gasped, sitting up straight. "What?!"

"Marcus lied to you from the beginning," Detective Miller explained. "He knew Clara was pregnant when she fled New Jersey, but he also knew he wasn't the father because he was serving a six-month sentence in county jail during the exact timeframe of conception."

"Then why did he claim her?!" I asked, stunned.

"He found Clara's obituary online two weeks ago," Detective Miller said. "He knew James came from a prosperous family. He forged a fake New Jersey cohabitation agreement and filed a fraudulent paternity claim purely as an extortion scheme to extract fifty thousand dollars from your family."

"So... who is Daisy's father?" James asked softly.

Detective Miller pulled a document from a file folder. "Clara left a sealed letter in her personal belongings at the shelter, addressed to the hospital social worker. It was opened this afternoon by the court investigator."

The detective looked at us with a gentle, warm smile.

"In the letter, Clara stated explicitly that Daisy was conceived through an anonymous, legal donor bank in Philadelphia," Detective Miller read from the report. "Clara knew she was sick. She wanted a child to love before her time ran out, but she chose to have her independently so no man could ever hurt her or her baby again."

Tears flooded my eyes as the beautiful, tragic truth washed over me. Clara hadn't been trapped by a bad man again. She had tried to create a pure, innocent light in her final year of life—a light that had now found its way home to us.
