Chapter 6 - THE FRACTURED FAMILY

When James came home that evening, the house exploded into a hurricane of panic and despair.
"Fifty thousand dollars?!" James roared, slamming his fist onto the kitchen counter, rattling the coffee mugs. "The nerve of that scumbag! He's a criminal! I'm calling our lawyer right now!"
"James, listen to me!" I cried, pacing back and forth across the kitchen floor while Martha rocked a crying Daisy in the adjacent living room. "He filed the legal paternity papers! Our lawyer told us weeks ago that if a biological father appears, the court automatically halts kinship adoption until DNA testing is complete!"
"He doesn't care about Daisy!" James yelled, his eyes red with fury. "He wants ransom money! I won't be blackmailed by a man who let my sister suffer in a shelter!"
"If we fight him in court, it could take months—maybe years!" I sobbed, sinking into a kitchen chair, burying my face in my hands. "And if the DNA test proves he's the father, a judge might grant him visitation! Do you want that monster having unsupervised access to our baby girl?!"
Martha walked into the kitchen, her face pale, holding a sleeping Daisy against her shoulder.
"James... Sarah..." Martha said softly, her voice shaking with quiet grief. "Clara told me about Marcus years ago. On the rare occasions she called me, she was terrified of him. He was dangerous, violent, and involved in illegal gambling ring. He will ruin this child's life just to get back at our family."
"We don't have fifty thousand dollars just lying around, Mom!" James groaned, running both hands through his hair in absolute agony. "We have our savings, but most of it is tied up in our home equity and the boys' college funds!"
"We can sell my car," I offered immediately without a second thought. "We can take out a personal loan. We can mortgage the house! I don't care about the money, James! I care about keeping Daisy safe!"
"Paying him is a crime, Sarah!" James argued, leaning over the table, staring into my eyes with desperation. "If the court finds out we paid off a biological father to relinquish rights, it could invalidate the entire adoption! We could face criminal charges!"
We were trapped in a nightmare with no clear exit.
That night, neither James nor I slept. We lay side by side in the dark, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of Daisy in her crib beside us. Every hour felt like a ticking time bomb counting down to Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, twenty-four hours before Marcus's deadline, our nine-year-old son Ethan walked into the living room holding a small plastic piggy bank.
He walked over to where I was sitting on the couch, setting the piggy bank gently on my lap.
"Ethan?" I asked, wiping my bloodshot eyes. "What's this, sweetie?"
May you like
"I heard you and Dad talking last night," Ethan said quietly, his big brown eyes filled with pure, heartbreaking sincerity. "You said we need money to keep Daisy here. I have eighty-two dollars from my birthday and allowance. You can have it, Mom. Just please don't let that bad man take our sister away."
I pulled Ethan into my arms, sobbing uncontrollably against his shoulder, holding my son as my heart broke into a thousand pieces.
