Chapter 1 - THE SECRET ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway hummed overhead like a solitary, drawn-out note. My knees felt hollow as I sat on the vinyl-covered waiting room chair, the scent of antiseptic suddenly suffocating. James stayed on his knees in front of me, his rough hands trembling as he held both of mine.
"James," my voice cracked, barely audible. "Whose baby is in that room?"
"She was born three hours ago," James whispered, a single tear cutting through the dust on his cheek. "Her name on the temporary chart is Baby Girl Miller. But her biological mother... her mother isn't going to wake up, Sarah."
My breath hitched in my chest. "What are you talking about?"
"Do you remember my sister, Clara?" he asked, his voice shaking violently. "The one who cut all ties with our family eight years ago? The one who ran away with that abusive con man and refused every hand we ever extended?"
My heart slammed against my ribs. Clara. James’s younger sister had vanished into thin air years ago, leaving behind a trail of unpaid debts, broken promises, and destroyed relationships. James had spent years searching for her until she explicitly sent a lawyer's letter telling him to stay away.
"Clara was brought in by an ambulance at noon," James choked out. "She had severe preeclampsia and internal bleeding. She... she didn't tell anyone she was pregnant. She lived in a shelter three miles from here. By the time they performed the emergency C-section, it was too late to save her."
I stared at him, my mind spinning into overdrive. "Clara... Clara passed away today?"
"The social worker called me because I was listed as her emergency contact on an old police report from six years ago," James sobbed, hiding his face in my hands. "When I got here, Clara was already gone. But this little girl... this little girl survived. The shelter workers said Clara had no partner. No money. No family left except me."
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, burning plea that shattered my soul.
"The state is going to take her into foster care by tomorrow morning, Sarah," James whispered, his voice breaking into a jagged sob. "Unless we sign the temporary guardianship papers right now. I know what we promised each other. I know we closed the door on having another child. But when I held her... when I looked into her eyes... she has Clara's chin, Sarah. And she has nowhere else to go."
My tears spilled over, hot and fast, soaking into my shirt. I looked past James's shoulder toward the glass window of the room. Through the glare, I saw the tiny plastic bassinet. Inside was a tiny bundle wrapped in a striped hospital blanket, a small tuft of dark hair visible under a pink cotton cap.

A daughter. Not born from my body, but born from the blood of the man who had loved me unconditionally for eleven years.
"Take me inside," I whispered, pulling James up by his trembling hands. "Take me to see our niece."
