Chapter 9 - THE FINAL RECKONING

Matteo stood in the doorway, drenched in rain and blood, his eyes wide with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury.
He saw the blood on the floor. He saw the cut on my arm. He saw Clara holding a bloody combat knife, standing over me and his son.
"CLARA!" Matteo’s voice thundered with enough force to rattle the steel walls of the bunker.
Clara turned around, her bleeding face pale with sudden, overwhelming terror as she faced her husband. "Matteo... wait! I can explain! The Morettis forced me—"
Matteo didn't speak. He moved faster than a striking viper.
He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Clara by the throat with his dragon-inked hand, lifting her completely off her feet and slamming her violently against the steel wall.
The combat knife clattered harmlessly to the floor.
Clara gasped for air, her hands clawing futilely at Matteo’s iron grip. "Matteo... please... I'm your wife... I'm Leo's mother..."
"My wife died two years ago," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register so dark, so devoid of human mercy, that it sounded like a judgment from hell itself. "You are just a snake that crawled into my home."
"Matteo!" I called out from behind the desk, holding Leo close to my chest.
Matteo looked over his shoulder at me. His dark eyes were burning with rage, but as he saw me holding our son safely, the wild beast inside him seemed to pause.
"Don't do it in front of him," I begged softly, tears streaming down my face, nodding toward Leo. "Don't let his mother's legacy be another murder in front of his eyes. He deserves better than this world."
Matteo stared at me for three long, suffocating seconds. The muscle in his jaw clenched violently.
Slowly, deliberately, Matteo lowered Clara to the floor, though his hand remained clamped around her neck, pinning her against the wall.
"Bruno!" Matteo barked without looking away from Clara.
Bruno stepped into the bunker, holding a submachine gun, his chest heaving. "Yes, Boss?"
"Take this creature to the deep cellars," Matteo ordered coldly. "Call the federal authorities. Hand over all her offshore accounts, her connection to the Moretti cartel, and her murder charges. Let her spend the rest of her miserable life rotting in a maximum-security prison."
"No! Matteo! No!" Clara screamed as Bruno and two guards grabbed her arms, dragging her backward out of the safe room. "You can't do this to me! I am a D’Angelo! Matteo!"
Her shrieks faded down the long concrete hallway until they were swallowed by the quiet night.
The safe room fell completely silent, except for the soft hum of the emergency lights and Leo's quiet breathing.
Matteo turned around slowly. The terrifying mob Don melted away, leaving a man who looked utterly exhausted, broken, and deeply wounded.
He walked over to me, stepping around the fallen desk. He looked down at the cut on my arm, his dark eyes brimming with unbearable remorse.
"You're hurt," he whispered, his voice cracking.
"It's just a scratch," I said softly, tears falling down my cheeks.
Matteo dropped to his knees right in front of me, sinking onto the hard steel floor. The proud, feared Don of New York buried his face into my lap, his large shoulders shaking as heavy, silent sobs wracked his body. Two years of betrayal, grief, and pain finally broke through his iron armor.
I sat down beside him on the floor, keeping Leo nestled between us. I reached out with my uninjured arm, wrapping it around Matteo’s broad shoulders, pulling his head against my chest, running my fingers through his dark hair.

Leo reached out his tiny hand, patting his father's head, making that sweet, breathy laugh again.
"It's over, Matteo," I whispered into his hair, kissing the top of his head as the tears fell freely. "It's finally over. You're safe now. Both of you."
