Chapter 6 - THE DEAD RETURN

The word echoed through the cavernous foyer like a grenade detonation.
Alive.
Matteo froze. The color drained from his face so rapidly it looked as though his heart had stopped beating. His grip on Leo tightened instinctively, his dark eyes widening in a mixture of horror, disbelief, and profound shock.
"What did you say?" Matteo rasped, his voice barely a breath.
"The lab ran the sample three times, Boss," Bruno stammered, holding out the digital tablet. "The DNA profile matches Clara D’Angelo with a 99.9% accuracy. The blood on that glass in the alley... she was at the restaurant last night. She was watching us."
I stood frozen beside Matteo, my stomach plunging into a cold, bottomless pit.
Clara was alive. The woman whose face I shared, the woman whose baby I was holding, the woman whose husband was currently holding my chin—she hadn't died in Palermo. She was in New York.
"How...?" Matteo whispered, taking the tablet with a shaking hand. He stared at the genetic markers glowing blue on the screen. "I buried her... I identified her ring... her watch..."
"The body in Palermo was burned beyond recognition, Boss," Bruno reminded him quietly. "We assumed it was her because the car belonged to her and her personal belongings were inside. But if she survived..."
"Then she staged her own death," I completed the sentence quietly, the realization striking me with terrifying clarity.
Matteo turned to look at me, his eyes wild, haunted, and completely torn open. Two years of grief, guilt, and mourning shattered into a million sharp pieces in a single second.
"Mara..." Matteo started, reaching toward me, but I took a step back, pulling away from his touch.
"Don't," I said, my voice trembling as tears threatened to spill over my lashes. "Matteo... if your wife is alive... then everything changes."
"I don't understand any of this," Matteo roared, slamming the tablet against the wall, shattering the screen into fragments. "If she was alive, why didn't she come back to me?! Why did she leave her eight-month-old child?! Why did she let me believe I had failed to protect her?!"
Leo, startled by his father's sudden explosion, began to cry softly.
I stepped forward, taking Leo back into my arms. The baby instantly quieted, burying his face into my collarbone, clutching my silk shirt.
"Because she didn't want to be found, Matteo," I said softly, looking at him with deep pity and a breaking heart. "Or... because she was working with the people who tried to kill you."
Matteo stared at me, the dark truth settling over him like a suffocating blanket.
Before anyone could speak another word, the estate's heavy emergency sirens began to blare across the grounds—a sharp, deafening mechanical wail that lit up the windows with flashing red security lights.
"PERIMETER BREACH," a synthetic voice echoed through the house speakers. "WEST GATE COMPROMISED. MULTIPLE INTRUDERS ON GROUNDS."
"They're here," Bruno drew his sidearm.
Matteo snapped back into military focus, the grieving husband instantly replaced by the ruthless mob Don. He pulled a heavy tactical pistol from his shoulder holster, racking the slide.
"Bruno, take six men and secure the foyer," Matteo ordered coldly. "Mara, take Leo into the safe room in the basement. Now!"

"Matteo, be careful!" I yelled over the deafening sirens.
He looked at me one last time, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, protective fire. "I will end this tonight, Mara. Go!"
