Chapter 1 - The Fall of a Fraud

The air in the restaurant turned ice-cold the moment Alexander Reed spoke his name.
Mark Thompson’s face flushed red, then instantly drained of color, leaving behind a sickly gray complexion. The expensive champagne glass in his hand began to tremble. His knuckles turned white.
"Al... Alexander?" Mark stuttered, his voice dropping an octave as his artificial confidence crumbled. "That’s... that’s impossible. You were reported missing at sea two years ago. The plane crash in the Pacific..."
"Reported missing," Alexander corrected smoothly, adjusting the collar of his suit as he stood shield-like in front of Sarah. His presence commanded the room so effortlessly that even the people holding up their phones to record forgot to press pause. "Not dead. A distinction you conveniently ignored while helping yourself to my estate, my accounts, and my wife."
Lena Carter looked back and forth between Mark and Alexander, her malicious smile faltering. "Mark? What is he talking about? Who is this guy? You told me Sarah was just a gold-digger clinging to your coat-tails!"
Sarah wrapped Alexander’s heavy, warm jacket tighter around her exposed shoulders. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked at the sharp line of Alexander’s jaw, the familiar silver ring on his left hand, and the dark, piercing eyes she had grieved over for twenty-four agonizing months.
It was really him. He wasn't a ghost.
"Mark," Sarah whispered, her voice no longer trembling with sadness, but with absolute disgust. "You told me you were paying the rent. You told me you were managing Alexander’s legacy trust to keep his company afloat."
"Shut up, Sarah!" Mark snapped, panic blinding his judgment. He took a aggressive step forward, forgetting who was standing between them. "Don't play the victim here! You loved the lifestyle! You loved the penthouses, the galas, the open tabs!"
Before Mark could finish his sentence, two massive men in tailored dark suits stepped through the shattered glass doors of the restaurant. They moved with military precision, positioning themselves directly behind Mark and Lena.
"Mr. Thompson," Alexander said calmly, taking a step toward him. "You forgot one minor detail about the Reed Empire. I don't just own real estate. I own forty percent of the commercial banking system in this city. Including the bank that issued the black card you used to buy that suit."
Alexander pulled a sleek silver smartphone from his pocket and tapped the screen once.
Within three seconds, Mark’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket. Then Lena’s phone rang. Then the restaurant’s manager hurried out of his office, looking pale as he held a landline receiver.
"Your credit lines have been frozen," Alexander announced softly. "Your luxury vehicle outside is currently being towed for illegal acquisition using forged signatures. And the fraud department of the Federal Reserve has just received a twelve-hundred-page audit of every transaction you made using my wife’s stolen power of attorney."
Lena gasped, frantically checking her phone screen. "Transaction Declined," the red text flashed. "Account Suspended."
"Mark!" Lena shrieked, grabbing his arm so hard her manicured nails nearly drew blood. "Fix this! Tell him he’s wrong! You bought me that diamond necklace! You bought me the apartment in South Beach!"
"With my wife's money," Alexander added, his voice cutting through her screeches. "Which means, Miss Carter, you are currently in possession of stolen property. And considering you just committed physical assault on camera..." Alexander gestured vaguely to the dozens of patrons still filming the entire incident, "...I believe the police officers waiting outside will have plenty of reasons to hold you both without bail tonight."
On cue, the flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers painted the high-end glass windows of the restaurant.
Mark turned to run toward the back exit, but the two security guards caught him by the shoulders, slamming him face-first onto the marble table where his expensive steak was sitting cold.
"Let go of me! Sarah! Tell them to let me go!" Mark screamed, his face pressed against the table, his dignity completely destroyed in front of the entire upper-class crowd. "Sarah, please! After everything we were to each other!"
Sarah stepped out from behind Alexander. She looked down at Mark—the man who had manipulated her grief, lied to her for years, and left her to be humiliated in public.
"You're right about one thing, Mark," Sarah said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "I should have known my place. And my place is nowhere near a traitor like you."
As the police stormed the venue and cuffed both Lena and Mark, dragging them out into the rainy night amidst the flashing cameras of local paparazzi, Alexander turned around to face Sarah.
The room fell quiet again.
Sarah looked up into the eyes of her long-lost husband, her hands gripping his jacket. "Alexander... where have you been?"
May you like
Alexander reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that had escaped down her cheek.
"I'm going to tell you everything, Sarah," he said softly. "But first, let's get you out of here. Our war has just begun."
