Chapter 5 - THE SAFE HOUSE SANCTUARY

Within an hour, the noisy chaos of Manhattan was left behind.

We were transported in a motorcade of three black armored SUVs out of the city, crossing the bridge into the deep, secluded woodlands of upstate New York. Our destination was the Duca estate—a sprawling, gated fortress surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, security towers, and thirty armed men loyal to Alessandro.

Mia had finally fallen asleep in my arms, exhausted from her tears, her small thumb tucked firmly in her mouth. Mrs. Gable had been taken to a private medical facility, leaving just me, Mia, and Alessandro inside the master suite of the country estate.

The suite was vast, warm, and scented with pine and lavender. A stone fireplace burned brightly in the corner, casting flickering orange light across the plush leather sofas and grand king-sized bed.

I sat on the edge of the bed, gently rocking Mia, my body still shaking from the residual shock of the afternoon.

Alessandro walked into the room, having changed out of his suit into a simple black sweater and dark trousers. He looked less like a mob boss and more like a man carrying the weight of the entire world on his shoulders.

He carried a tray with a pot of chamomile tea and two cups, setting it down on the nightstand beside me.

"Drink," he said softly, pouring a cup and handing it to me. "It will calm your nervous system."

I took the warm porcelain cup, my fingers brushing against his. "Thank you, Alessandro."

It was the first time I had called him by his first name without the formal "Mr. Duca." He noticed it, his dark eyes softening as he sat down on the edge of the mattress beside me.

"I am sorry, Elena," he murmured, looking down at sleeping Mia. "I brought this terror to your doorstep. If I had simply fired you three weeks ago, Rossi would have never targeted you."

I looked at him, shaking my head firmly. "No. If you had fired me, I would be living in a damp basement in Queens right now, unable to afford formula, completely defenseless when Rossi's men came looking for leverage anyway. You gave us a home. You gave us security. And today... your people bled to keep my daughter safe."

Alessandro stared at me, genuinely moved by my words. "You are an extraordinary woman, Elena. Most people in your position would curse my name and demand to be let go."

"I don't curse your name, Alessandro," I whispered, meeting his intense gaze. "I trust you."

The word hung in the quiet, warm room like a sacred vow.

Alessandro reached out, his hand gently cupping my cheek. His thumb stroked my cheekbone with incredible tenderness, wiping away the faint trace of a dried tear.

"I have spent my whole life surrounded by enemies and mercenaries," he said softly, his face hovering just inches from mine. "I forgot what it feels like to have someone look at me with real trust."

"Alessandro..." I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs, but this time, it wasn't out of fear. It was an overwhelming, breathless longing.

He leaned in slowly, giving me every chance to pull away. I didn't move. I closed my eyes as his lips met mine in a deep, gentle, breathtaking kiss that seemed to melt away every terror, every fear, and every lingering pain of my past.

His kiss was possessive yet tender, a silent promise of absolute protection.

When he pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with a fierce, unmistakable flame. He looked from me to Mia, who let out a soft baby sigh in her sleep.

"Tomorrow, my men finish the Rossi war," Alessandro vowed, his voice thick with emotion. "And when the dust settles... you and Mia will never have to hide again."
