Chapter 2 - THE COLD REALITY OF PROTECTIONBy six o'clock that evening, my entire world had been upended with military precision.

Two men in sharp dark suits arrived at the penthouse—not to throw me out, but to carry my worn duffel bags and Mia’s portable crib. I was escorted down the private elevator to a black armored SUV waiting in the underground garage.

We were driven three blocks north to a quiet, elegant pre-war building on East 72nd Street. The apartment on the fourth floor was sunlit, fully furnished, and smelled of polished oak and fresh linen. A middle-aged woman with a warm smile named Mrs. Gable was waiting inside. She was a former pediatric nurse whom Alessandro’s security firm had vetted within two hours.

"Mr. Duca pays for everything," Mrs. Gable explained gently as she took Mia into her arms, cradling her with practiced ease. "Rent, utilities, medical care, and my salary. Your only job, Miss Elena, is to continue your duties at the penthouse and keep your daughter safe."

I stood in the center of the beautiful living room, feeling completely overwhelmed. For eight months, I had lived in constant terror—counting pennies, skipping meals to buy formula, hiding in laundry rooms, praying my landlord wouldn't change the locks. Now, with a single stroke of his pen, Alessandro Duca had wiped away my financial desperation.

But in my world, nothing came without a price. Especially not from a man like Alessandro.

The following morning, I returned to the penthouse at seven o'clock sharp. The rain had cleared, leaving Manhattan bathed in crisp morning sunlight. I let myself in using my keycard, expecting the silent, empty penthouse I was used to.

Instead, the living room was filled with five men standing in a tight circle around a mahogany coffee table covered in maps and digital tablets. Among them was Marco, Alessandro’s chief of security—a broad-shouldered man with a jagged scar along his jawline.

"She’s here," Marco announced coldly as I stepped inside, holding my cleaning caddy.

Alessandro was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a porcelain cup of espresso. He turned around, his expression hardened back into the ruthless CEO mask the world knew.

"Elena," Alessandro said smoothly. "Come here."

I walked over cautiously, my shoes squeaking softly against the floor.

"Marco believes I made a tactical error by keeping you and your daughter close," Alessandro explained, tossing a leather-bound file onto the table. "He believes that by providing you an apartment, I have created a vulnerability. A leverage point for my rivals."

My stomach tightened into a painful knot. "Mr. Duca, if I am a risk to you, I can leave the city. I never wanted to cause problems—"

"Quiet," Alessandro commanded gently. He looked at Marco. "Show her the photo."

Marco reluctantly tapped a tablet screen and turned it toward me. My heart stopped.

It was a high-resolution surveillance photograph taken three days ago. It showed me entering the penthouse service entrance, holding Mia tucked inside my coat. Standing across the street, partially hidden behind a delivery van, was a man in a dark trench coat holding a camera with a long telephoto lens.

"That is Victor Rossi’s man," Alessandro stated coldly. "The Rossi family has been trying to find a crack in my perimeter for two years. They didn't find a mole in my security team. They found my maid."

I felt the blood drain from my face. "They... they know about Mia?"

"They know you were hiding something," Alessandro corrected. "Rossi assumes you are carrying sensitive documents out of my home in that baby carrier. They don't realize you were just carrying an eight-month-old infant."

Alessandro stepped closer, his imposing presence filling my vision. "Marco wants me to send you away to Chicago. But I don't run from Rossi. And I don't let my people get intimidated."

"Your people?" I whispered, taken aback by the word.

May you like

"You work under my roof, Elena," Alessandro said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. "That makes you mine to protect. From today on, you don't use the service entrance. You enter through the front lobby. And Marco’s team will guard your apartment twenty-four hours a day."

He was offering me absolute security, but as I looked into his dark, calculating eyes, I realized the terrifying truth: Mia and I were no longer just a maid and her baby. We were now pieces on a dangerous chessboard.
