Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Showdown

At 4:55 PM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Harrington Tower in downtown Boston was buzzing with corporate panic.
Inside the top-floor executive boardroom, twelve board members sat around an oval mahogany table that overlooked the harbor. At the head of the table sat William Vance—a imposing, white-haired billionaire with a ruthless reputation—and Richard Harrington.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," William Vance announced, tapping his gold pen against his water glass. "In light of the tragic medical decline of our dear Eleanor Harrington, and the unfortunate public scandal surrounding recent events, Richard and I are proposing a resolution to streamline leadership. We move to permanently revoke Eleanor’s voting proxy and transfer executive chairmanship to Richard Harrington, effective immediately."
"Is there any discussion?" Richard added, a smug, triumphant smile playing on his lips. "If not, let us proceed to a vote—"
BANG!
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with tremendous force, slamming against the polished walls.
Every board member jumped in their seats.
Ethan Harrington strode into the room, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit. But he wasn't alone.
Walking beside him was Leah, holding a leather document case. Behind them came two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with three uniformed Boston police officers.
"This vote is illegal, Richard," Ethan’s voice boomed across the vast room, ringing like a death knell.
William Vance stood up, his face darkening with anger. "Ethan! How dare you interrupt an official board meeting with police officers! Have you lost your mind?!"
"The only people who have lost their minds are the criminals sitting at the head of this table," Ethan replied smoothly, walking up to the center of the mahogany board table.
Leah stepped forward, unzipping her document case, and laid twelve thick, blue-bound folders in front of each board member.
"What is this trash?!" Richard sneered, refusing to touch the folder in front of him.
"That 'trash', Mr. Harrington, is the complete forensic audit of the Harrington Medical Trust," Leah stated clearly, her voice confident and unshakeable as she looked the powerful executives dead in the eye. "Including bank wire transfers tracing two point four million dollars directly from Eleanor Harrington’s care fund into offshore accounts registered under Vance Holdings."
The board members frantically flipped open the folders. Gasps of shock echoed through the room as they scanned the verified bank stamps, forged customs declarations, and chemical analysis reports from Mass General Hospital.
"This is a total fabrication!" William Vance roared, his face turning purple with rage. "This girl is a low-level physical therapist! She has no authority here! Security, throw them out!"
"The security guards on this floor have already been detained for questioning, Mr. Vance," one of the SEC agents stepped forward, pulling a federal warrant from his jacket. "William Vance, Richard Harrington—you are both under federal indictment for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit dangerous harm through pharmaceutical substitution."
Richard’s knees went weak. He collapsed backward into his leather chair, his arrogant posture instantly deflating like a punctured tire.
"No... no, this can't be happening," Richard whimpered, looking at his nephew with desperate, pleading eyes. "Ethan... I’m your uncle! I'm your father's brother! You can't do this to me!"
"You fed my mother poison for three years, Richard," Ethan said, his voice cold as arctic ice, devoid of any mercy. "You stopped being my family the moment you traded her life for money."
The police officers stepped forward, pulling out hand-cuffs. Within seconds, the metallic click-click of restraint echoed through the silent boardroom.
As William Vance was being led away in cuffs, he stopped in front of Leah, his eyes burning with pure hatred. "My daughter is in a cell because of you! You destroyed two of the most powerful families in Boston!"
Leah looked back at the ruined billionaire without an ounce of fear. "Your daughter put herself in that cell when she chose malice over humanity. And you destroyed yourselves the moment you decided that power was more important than truth."
The board members watched in awe as the former titans of New England business were marched out of the tower in handcuffs, surrounded by media cameras waiting in the lobby below.
When the room cleared, Ethan turned to the remaining board members. "Effective immediately, my mother, Eleanor Harrington, retains full chairmanship. And as her legal proxy, I hereby nominate Leah Montgomery to head the newly established Harrington Medical Ethics Oversight Committee."

The board members stood up one by one, erupting into a unanimous round of applause.
Leah looked at Ethan, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. For the first time in ten years, the heavy burden of her past was gone. Justice had finally arrived.
