Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Estate

The grand gala was canceled immediately. By midnight, the last of the aristocratic guests had departed, leaving the sprawling Harrington estate wrapped in a quiet, heavy atmosphere.
Outside, rain began to pelt against the tall stained-glass windows, the storm echoing the turmoil inside the mansion.
In the private study on the second floor, Ethan stood near the grand fireplace, watching the flames lick the charred oak logs. A crystal tumbler of dark amber bourbon sat untouched on the heavy mahogany desk behind him.
Leah sat on the plush leather sofa, wrapping her hands around a warm cup of chamomile tea that the housekeeper had brought her. Her knees were still sore from slamming onto the stone landing, but her mind was racing far faster than her pulse.
"The police took Victoria into custody thirty minutes ago," Ethan said, turning around to face her. His tie was loosened, the top button of his crisp white shirt undone. "Her father’s lawyers are already at the station trying to post bail, but with the mansion’s security footage showing her leaning over the chair three minutes before the incident, no judge will dismiss this."
"Ethan, you need to hear what she whispered right before you came down the stairs," Leah said, setting her teacup down on the saucer with a soft clink.
Ethan frowned, stepping closer. "What do you mean?"
"When Victoria was ordering me to leave the house, right after I checked the brake lever, she panicked," Leah explained, her dark eyes looking straight into his. "She didn't just say 'get out.' She leaned down and said, 'You were supposed to be fired yesterday before you found the ledger.'"
Ethan’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "The ledger? What ledger?"
"Your family’s medical trust ledger," Leah said quietly. "As your mother’s primary physical therapist, I have access to her daily care logs. Two days ago, while reviewing her medication schedule in the sunroom, I found a secondary folder tucked inside the old leather binder. It contained financial statements showing monthly wire transfers of fifty thousand dollars coming out of Eleanor’s medical care fund, routed through a shell company in the Cayman Islands."
Ethan froze. The air in the room grew instantly colder. "My mother’s medical trust is managed exclusively by my uncle, Richard Harrington, and the Vance Financial Group."
"I didn't know who was behind it, so I kept quiet and began cross-referencing the prescription receipts," Leah continued, her voice steady. "Ethan, someone has been systematically overbilling your mother’s medical account for three years, stealing millions under the guise of imported specialized therapies. I think Victoria found out that I was looking at those files. sabotaging the wheelchair wasn't just about jealousy over you... it was an emergency attempt to create a scandal that would get me fired and discredited before I could show those documents to you."
Before Ethan could answer, the double doors of the study burst open.
Richard Harrington—Ethan’s uncle and the chief financial officer of Harrington Enterprises—strode into the room. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, dressed in a sharp tuxedo, his face flushed with righteous anger.
"Ethan! What is the meaning of this outrage?!" Richard demanded, slamming a leather portfolio onto the desk. "You had William Vance’s daughter arrested in front of the entire Boston high society! Do you have any idea what this is going to do to our stock price when the market opens on Monday morning?!"
Ethan didn't flinch. He walked slowly over to the desk, standing tall in front of his uncle.
"My mother was almost sent flying down a flight of marble stairs, Uncle Richard," Ethan said softly, his voice laced with venom. "And you are worried about Monday’s opening bell?"
"It was an accident! A foolish girl's prank gone wrong!" Richard barked, waving his hand dismissively. "Victoria is young, emotional, and head over heels in love with you! She acted stupidly out of jealousy toward this... this physical therapist! You handle these things quietly behind closed doors, Ethan! You don't hand a Vance over to the police like a common criminal!"
"She jammed a piece of her bracelet into the brake, Richard," Ethan stated coldly. "That isn't a prank. That is attempted murder."
"And what about the trust fund?" Leah spoke up from the sofa, standing up and facing the powerful executive without a shred of fear. "What about the two million dollars drained from Mrs. Harrington’s medical fund over the past thirty-six months, Mr. Harrington?"
Richard snapped his head toward Leah, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Shut your mouth! You are an employee here! A temporary worker hired to stretch my sister-in-law's legs! How dare you make wild accusations against the management of this estate?!"
"She isn't making accusations, Uncle," Ethan interjected, stepping directly between Richard and Leah, his massive frame shielding her completely. "She is stating facts that my legal team will be auditing starting at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
Richard’s face paled slightly, but he quickly sneered. "You are letting your heart rule your head, nephew. This girl comes from nothing. Her father was a disgraced accountant who went bankrupt ten years ago. Did she tell you that? Did she tell you that she came into this house with a grudge against the wealthy?"
Leah’s heart slammed against her ribs. The private pain she had hidden for a decade was suddenly dragged into the light.
"My father was framed by corporate raiders who stole his firm, Mr. Harrington," Leah said, her voice shaking with intense emotion, though her chin remained held high. "He died trying to clear his name. I didn't come into this house for money. I came here to do my job and protect Mrs. Harrington. And unlike you, I don't hide behind stolen millions."
Ethan turned his head, looking at Leah with a deep, newfound understanding. The mystery of her quiet resilience, her unbelievable work ethic, and her deep empathy for his suffering mother suddenly made complete sense.
"Get out of my study, Richard," Ethan said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And consider yourself suspended from all financial oversight of the Harrington Estate pending a full forensic audit."
Richard stared at his nephew, realization dawning on him that Ethan was no longer the young heir he could manipulate. "You are making a catastrophic mistake, Ethan. You choose this nobody over your own blood and your biggest business partners? You will lose everything."

"I'd rather lose every dollar I own than share a room with a snake," Ethan replied.
With a harsh scowl, Richard grabbed his portfolio, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the study, slamming the heavy wooden doors behind him.
