Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Clinic

By Monday afternoon, the city of Boston was engulfed in a massive media storm.

Headlines across the country blared the story: HERITAGE IN PERIL: CARTER VANCE’S DAUGHTER ARRESTED IN SABOTAGE OF HARRINGTON MATRIARCH.

The stock price of Harrington-Vance Logistics plummeted twelve percent in early trading, but inside the private wing of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the noise of the world could not penetrate.

Eleanor Harrington lay in a private, sunlit recovery suite. After the traumatic event at the gala, her blood pressure had spiked dangerously, requiring round-the-clock monitoring.

Leah sat by the bedside, gently adjusting the IV drip monitor before sitting down to adjust the warm lavender wrap around Eleanor’s legs.

"You should be resting at your own apartment, Leah," Eleanor said softly, turning her pale face toward the young woman. "You've been here for thirty-six hours straight. Ethan told me you haven't slept."

"I'm not leaving your side until we know you're entirely stable, Mrs. Harrington," Leah smiled warmly, pouring a fresh glass of water. "Besides, the hospital food here can't compare to the broth I make for you at the house, but we have to make do."

The heavy wooden door opened, and Ethan walked in. He wore a crisp dark suit, looking tired but intensely focused. He carried a sleek black leather briefcase.

"How is she?" Ethan asked, walking over to kiss his mother’s forehead before placing a hand on Leah’s shoulder. The subtle touch sent a warm current through Leah's entire body.

"Her vitals are stabilizing," Leah replied, looking up at him. "How did the audit go?"

Ethan walked over to the small table near the window and opened his briefcase, pulling out a thick binder filled with red-tagged financial documents.

"It’s worse than we thought," Ethan said, his jaw tightening. "The forensic team spent all night going through the shell company transactions. The money wasn't just being stolen from my mother’s medical fund. It was being used to bribe officials at the state pharmaceutical board."

Leah frowned. "Pharmaceutical board? Why?"

"Because three years ago, my mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of neurological degeneration," Ethan explained, his eyes filled with pain. "The experimental drug she has been receiving—the one imported from Switzerland that costs sixty thousand dollars a month—was supposed to be slowing her paralysis down."

Eleanor sighed deeply, looking at her motionless legs beneath the white sheet. "It never felt like it was working, Ethan. Every time I took those injections, my head thrummed with fever, and my legs felt heavier."

"That's because it wasn't Swiss medicine, Mom," Ethan said, his voice choking with emotional fury. "The audit revealed that Richard and William Vance forged the customs documentation. They were substituting the high-grade Swiss therapeutic compound with a cheap, toxic muscle relaxant manufactured in an unaccredited lab in South America. They kept ninety-five percent of the fund for themselves and fed my mother sugar and toxins to keep her weak, dependent, and bedridden!"

Leah gasped, clutching her hand over her mouth. "That's why her nerve response tests were always showing sudden, unexplainable spikes of inflammation! They weren't trying to cure her... they were keeping her sick so she couldn't exercise her voting power in the corporation!"

"Precisely," Ethan said. "As long as my mother was incapacitated, Uncle Richard held her proxy votes on the board of directors. Combined with the Vance family’s shares, they had total control of Harrington Enterprises. They were planning a full corporate buyout next month."

"Those monsters," Eleanor whispered, tears trickling down her wrinkled cheeks. "My own brother-in-law... my late husband's brother..."

"They thought they had covered every track," Ethan said, turning his gaze toward Leah with intense admiration. "They never expected a brilliant physical therapist to actually read the chemical composition logs on the medication shipments. You saved her life twice, Leah. First from the poison... and then on the stairs."

Leah felt a flush of warmth spread across her cheeks. "I was just doing my job, Ethan. When my father lost his company, nobody stood up for him. Nobody looked at the numbers. I promised myself I would never let an innocent person be destroyed by powerful people if I had the power to stop it."

Ethan stepped closer to her, reaching out and gently taking both of her hands in his. "You are the bravest woman I have ever met, Leah. And I promise you, by the time this week is over, your father’s name will be completely cleared, and the people who hurt my family will be behind bars forever."

Before Leah could answer, Ethan’s phone buzzed loudly on the table. He picked it up, answering instantly.

"Ethan," his head of security reported over the speaker. "We have a situation. William Vance and Richard Harrington just called an emergency board meeting at the corporate headquarters for five o'clock today. They are using an old clause in the charter to vote on removing your mother as Chairman of the Board due to mental incapacity."

Ethan looked at his watch. It was 3:45 PM.

"They think they can close the trap before the police finish analyzing the financial audit," Ethan said, his eyes blazing with fierce determination. He turned to his mother, then to Leah. "They want a battle? We're going to give them one."
