Chapter 9 - REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION

Three months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the vast green lawns of the new estate in River Forest.

The three months following the shooting had been a whirlwind of healing, restructuring, and slow, beautiful reconciliation. Arthur Shaw and Dr. Harrison were both serving long federal prison sentences for fraud, attempted murder, and medical malpractice. Evelyn Shaw had quietly moved abroad, completely erased from Chicago society.

Meanwhile, Luca had thrown himself into physical therapy with the same relentless focus he used in business. Within six weeks, he was back on his feet, walking without a cane, and spending every single afternoon with Leo and Maya.

I stood on the expansive back terrace of the estate, sipping iced tea, watching Luca play tag with the kids near the outdoor pool. He was laughing—a booming, hearty sound that filled the entire yard. Leo was trying to outrun him, while Maya was giggling uncontrollably as Luca pretended to be a clumsy monster trying to catch her.

"He looks happy," a voice said behind me.

I turned to see Signora Rosa Moretti—Luca’s mother—stepping onto the terrace, wearing an elegant floral dress. She had flown in from Italy the moment she heard about the twins.

"He's a different man, Rosa," I said, smiling as I handed her a glass of tea. "I didn't think it was possible for him to soften like this."

"A man without a family is just a ghost chasing gold, Nia," Rosa said warmly, wrapping her arm around my shoulders. "You gave him a soul seven years ago, and he lost it when he lost you. Thank you for giving my son a second chance."

"He earned it," I admitted softly, looking back at Luca, who had just scooped both kids into his arms, swinging them around in circles on the grass.

Later that evening, after Rosa had left and the kids were fast asleep in their customized bedroom suites upstairs, I walked out to the edge of the estate's private lake. The moon was reflected clearly on the still water.

Heavy, familiar footsteps approached from behind. Luca wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his broad, solid chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, his breathing steady and warm against my skin.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently.

"Thinking about seven years ago," I said, leaning back into his embrace. "If someone had told me then that I’d be standing here with you, in your new house, watching our twins sleep upstairs... I would have told them they were insane."

Luca turned me around in his arms so I was facing him. He wore a simple white shirt and black trousers. He looked healthy, vibrant, and completely madly in love with me.

"I have something for you," Luca said, reaching into his pocket.

My heart fluttered. "Luca, you already bought the kids a pony last week. Please tell me you didn't buy another ridiculous gift."

Luca chuckled, pulling out a small, worn velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat. I recognized that box. It was the ring box from seven years ago.

He opened it. Inside sat my original engagement ring—a flawless, seven-carat emerald-cut diamond mounted on a platinum band.

"You kept it?" I whispered, staring at the sparkling ring in shock.

"I never let it out of my sight," Luca admitted softly, taking the ring out of the box. "When you left it on the kitchen counter seven years ago, it felt like my soul had been carved out. I kept it in my safe at the office every single day, waiting for a miracle I didn't think I deserved."

Luca sank down onto one knee on the soft grass, looking up at me with tears shining in his dark eyes.

"Nia Carter," Luca said, his voice trembling with profound emotion. "I broke your heart. I let wicked people poison my mind. I failed you as a husband once. But I have spent every second of the last three months trying to become the man you and our children deserve. Will you give me the honor of marrying me again? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making you the happiest woman on Earth?"

I looked down at the man who had fought through hell, through bullets, and through his own pride to reclaim my heart.

May you like

"Yes, Luca," I cried, laughing through my tears. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Luca stood up, sliding the ring onto my finger where it belonged, before pulling me into his arms and kissing me with a fierce, passionate devotion that erased every lingering shadow of our past.
