Chapter 8 - THE WAITING ROOM OF TRUTH

The surgical waiting room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was sterile, cold, and silent.
It was three o'clock in the morning. I sat on a hard vinyl chair, still wearing my blood-stained shirt, staring blankly at the wall. My hands were clean now—I had spent twenty minutes in the bathroom scrubbing Luca's blood from beneath my fingernails—but the horror of the night was burned into my mind.
Marcus sat beside me, handing me a paper cup of hot tea. "The surgeon said the bullet missed his vital organs, Nia. It shattered a rib and caused internal bleeding, but Luca is strong. He's going to make it."
I took the cup, my hands shaking so violently that the hot tea splashed over the rim. "He stepped right in front of the bullet, Marcus. He didn't even hesitate."
"Because he loves you," Marcus said simply. "Luca has done a lot of arrogant, foolish things in his life, Nia. But his love for you was never a lie. When he thought you couldn't have children, he didn't leave because he hated you. He left because he was terrified that his obsession with having an heir was turning him into a monster who would eventually make you miserable."
I looked at Marcus, surprised. "What?"
"Luca’s father was a cruel man who treated his mother like a trophy," Marcus explained softly. "When the fertility reports said you couldn't conceive, Luca felt a growing resentment inside himself. He was terrified that he would end up abusing you emotionally the way his father treated his mother. He thought by divorcing you and letting you go, he was saving you from his own darkness."
I buried my face in my hands, fresh tears falling. "He never told me that. He just walked away."
"Because Luca doesn't know how to communicate when he's broken," Marcus sighed. "He builds walls. He buys companies. He acts like a tyrant because he doesn't know how to admit he's bleeding inside."
The heavy double doors of the surgical suite swung open. A tired doctor in green scrubs stepped out, taking off his mask.
I scrambled to my feet. "Doctor! How is he?"
The doctor offered a reassuring smile. "Mr. Moretti is out of surgery. We successfully removed the bullet and repaired the muscular damage. He’s stable, breathing on his own, and currently resting in the ICU. You can see him, but only for a few minutes."
I let out a massive breath of relief, sinking back against the wall as a sob of gratitude escaped my lips.
Five minutes later, I stepped into the dimly lit ICU room. The rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor filled the quiet space. Luca lay in the hospital bed, hooked up to IV lines and an oxygen tube, his face pale against the white pillows.
I walked softly to the side of his bed and pulled up a chair. I reached out, gently wrapping my fingers around his large, warm hand.
"You terrifying, stubborn man," I whispered softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to his knuckles. "You survived a gunshot wound just to keep annoying me."
As if hearing my voice, the heart monitor’s rhythm quickened slightly. Luca’s eyelids fluttered open. He looked around the dim room until his dark eyes found my face.
"Nia..." he rasped weakly through his dry throat.
"I'm here, Luca," I said, tears filling my eyes as I squeezed his hand. "I'm right here. You're safe. Arthur Shaw is in police custody."
Luca offered a tiny, exhausted smile. "The kids... are they okay?"
"They're safe at Marcus's house," I assured him, brushing a strand of dark hair from his forehead. "They were worried about you. Leo made you a get-well card before he went to sleep."
Luca closed his eyes for a moment, a tear escaping the corner of his eye. "I was so scared... I was going to lose you again..."
"You didn't lose us, Luca," I whispered, leaning down until my lips were inches from his ear. "You saved my life tonight. You proved to me that you really have changed."
Luca turned his head, looking into my eyes with a desperate, healing vulnerability. "Can you ever forgive me, Nia? Can we ever be a family again?"
May you like
I looked at the man who had broken my heart seven years ago, the man who had fought his way back to me, and the man who had taken a bullet to protect me. The resentment, the pain, and the years of solitude finally dissolved, leaving only the undeniable truth of what we had always been.
"We are already a family, Luca," I whispered, pressing my lips gently to his. "Now rest. Your children are waiting for you."
