Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

While Luca spent every evening at my brownstone, learning how to be a father, the fallout from his split with Evelyn Shaw reached a dangerous boiling point.

Arthur Shaw, Evelyn's father and a powerful figure in Chicago real estate, was facing complete financial ruin. Federal agents had raided Dr. Harrison’s medical offices, uncovering a decade-long paper trail of bribed medical records, falsified lab tests, and illegal pharmaceutical sales. The scandal implicated the entire Shaw family.

One evening, after Luca had put Leo and Maya to bed—having read them three chapters of Harry Potter in animated voices—we sat in my kitchen drinking tea.

"You're staying in Chicago permanently now?" I asked, watching him rinse the kids' milk glasses in the sink.

"I transferred Moretti Global’s primary headquarters from New York back to Chicago yesterday," Luca said, wiping his hands on a towel and walking over to sit across from me at the island. "I bought a estate in River Forest—ten minutes from here. It has a huge yard, a pool, and plenty of room for Leo and Maya to have their own suites."

"Luca," I warned gently. "Don't rush them. They love living here."

"I know," Luca said softly, reaching across the table and covering my hand with his. His touch was warm, sending a familiar spark through my veins that I tried desperately to ignore. "I'm not forcing anything, Nia. I just want to build a life where they have everything they could ever dream of."

I looked down at our joined hands. "You're different, Luca. Seven years ago, you would have bought them a company instead of reading them a bedtime story."

"Seven years ago, I was a blind idiot who thought money and legacy were the only things that mattered," Luca whispered, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand. "Losing you broke me, Nia. I just didn't realize how broken I was until I saw you again."

"Luca, don't..." I tried to pull my hand back, but his grip remained gentle and firm.

"I mean it, Nia," Luca insisted, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unfiltered emotion. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I know I destroyed your trust. But every night I spend in this house, watching you with our children, I realize that I never stopped loving you. Not for a single day."

My breath caught in my throat. The room felt suddenly warm.

Before I could answer, my phone on the counter buzzed violently. It was an urgent text alert from my home security system: PERIMETER BREACH - BACK PATIO.

Luca’s posture instantly shifted. He stood up, shielding me behind his body, his eyes darting toward the glass back doors.

A loud crash shattered the quiet night as the glass patio doors were kicked inward. Two heavy-set men in dark hoodies burst into the kitchen, holding iron crowbars. Behind them stepped Arthur Shaw, his face red with rage, his clothes disheveled, holding a small revolver in his trembling hand.

"Shaw!" Luca roared, stepping fully in front of me. "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

"You ruined me, Moretti!" Arthur Shaw screamed, his eyes wild with unhinged desperation. "You destroyed my daughter's reputation! You handed my medical records to the FBI! My family is going to prison because of you and this... this cheap decorator!"

Arthur pointed the gun directly at my chest.

"Put the gun down, Arthur," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm tone, stepping directly into the line of fire to cover my body entirely with his own. "Your fight is with me. Leave Nia out of this."

"She hid your bastards for seven years!" Arthur yelled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "If I'm going to prison, Moretti, I'm taking everything you love with me!"

"Luca!" I gasped, clutching the back of his sweater in terror.

"Stay behind me, Nia," Luca whispered, his tone cold as steel. "No matter what happens, stay behind me."

Arthur raised the gun, his hand shaking uncontrollably as he aimed at Luca's heart.
