Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. The media circus outside was deafening, but inside, the atmosphere was as tense as a execution chamber.

Adrian sat at the defense table, looking haggard. His expensive suits no longer fit right; his skin was sallow from weeks in a holding cell after his bail was denied due to flight risk. Vanessa had already turned state’s evidence against him, trading her testimony for a reduced sentence for corporate fraud.

I sat in the front row, holding Evelyn’s hand.

The prosecution played the hidden camera footage from the night of the assault. The courtroom gasped as Adrian’s fist struck my face on the massive projection screens. The sound of his voice—“No one will ever believe you”—echoed through the hall, chilling everyone to the bone.

When it was my turn to take the stand, Adrian’s defense attorney tried to tear me apart. "Mrs. Vale, isn't it true you have a history of psychological instability? Isn't this entire corporate takeover a retaliatory plot born of jealousy over your husband's affair?"

I looked directly at the jury. "I was unstable because I was being systematically poisoned with sedatives by the man who swore to protect me. I was isolated because if I spoke to anyone, they would see the truth. I am not here for revenge. I am here for justice for my father, for my family’s legacy, and for every woman who has been told that her voice doesn't matter."

The defense attorney had no further questions.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours. The verdicts came down like thunderclaps: Guilty of aggravated assault, guilty of corporate fraud, guilty of grand larceny, and guilty of conspiracy.

As the judge read the sentence—twenty-five years in a maximum-security facility without the possibility of early parole—Adrian broke down, sobbing onto the table, begging me to look at him.

I didn't look back.
