Chapter 3 - The Shadow Empire Crumbles

By noon the next day, the Vale-Carter Capital tower was a war zone. I walked through the glass doors wearing a tailored charcoal suit, dark sunglasses hiding the swelling around my eye. Beside me walked Evelyn and a team of forensic accountants.

The employees stared in stunned silence. For years, Adrian had told them I was a fragile recluse who couldn't handle the stress of the corporate world. Today, I was walking into the boardroom as their owner.

We broke down the door to the executive suite. Adrian was there, frantically shredding documents, while Vanessa, his mistress, wept into a silk handkerchief.

"Get out of my chair, Vanessa," I said, my voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Vanessa looked up, her perfectly manicured face twisted in malice. "You can't do this, Elena! Adrian is the genius behind this firm! You’re just a broken little girl who relies on pills!"

"The pills your husband forced me to take? The ones the lab just confirmed were heavy sedatives mixed with placebos?" I threw a medical report onto the desk. "That’s called chemical restraint, Vanessa. It carries a ten-year prison sentence."

Adrian dropped the papers he was holding. He tried to look imposing, smoothing his jacket. "Elena, let’s be reasonable. We are married. If I fall, the company's stock plunges. We can settle this privately. I’ll give you a divorce, a generous settlement..."

"You won't give me anything, because you have nothing left," I replied.

Evelyn stepped forward, dropping a stack of legal notices on the desk. "At 9:00 AM, the Securities and Exchange Commission froze all accounts associated with Vale-Carter Capital and Adrian Vale personally. We have uncovered the twelve million dollars you routed to the Cayman Islands. Furthermore, the board has officially terminated your employment for cause. You are barred from the premises."

Two Carter security guards stepped into the office.

"Please escort Mr. Vale and his 'communications director' out of the building," I commanded. "And call the police. Tell them we have the forensic data ready for the grand jury."

As Adrian was dragged out, shouting curses, he looked back at me. The fear in his eyes was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
