Chapter 5 - The Final Plea

One month later.
The hallway of the County Courthouse was filled with news crews and legal teams. Andrew Sterling was led down the corridor in iron handcuffs, wearing an orange jumpsuit and foot shackles. His hair was cropped short, his face sunken, and his eyes devoid of any remaining pride.
As he walked toward the courtroom, a commotion broke out at the end of the hall.
The crowd parted as Mariana walked in, escorted by four private security guards and Julian Vance. She wore an immaculate pearl-white trench coat, her hair styled in soft waves, looking like a vision of absolute elegance and power.
Andrew stopped. The guards let him stand there for a moment.
“Mariana…” Andrew gasped, his voice raspy and broken. He dropped to his knees, the heavy chains rattling against the marble floor.
The press cameras flashed wildly as the former high-society prince knelt at the feet of the woman he had tried to humiliate.
“Mariana, please!” Andrew sobbed, tears rolling down his gaunt cheeks. “Look at me! I’m begging you! I’m on my knees! Just like you asked! I’ll stay on my knees forever! Please drop the charges! Tell the judge it was a mistake!”
Mariana stopped two paces away from him. She didn't look at him with anger. She didn't look at him with hatred.
She looked at him with complete, devastating indifference.
“Get up, Andrew,” Mariana said softly. “You look pathetic.”
“I’ll do anything, Mariana!” Andrew wept, trying to reach out with his cuffed hands to touch the hem of her coat, but her guards gently stepped in front of him. “I was blind! Brenda tricked me! My mother forced me! I loved you! I still love you!”
“You didn’t love me, Andrew,” Mariana replied calmly, looking down at him. “You loved the power you thought you had over me. You loved having someone you thought was weak so you could feel strong. You hit me because you thought I had no voice. You threw me out because you thought I had nowhere to go.”
She leaned down slightly, meeting his bloodshot eyes.
“You didn’t destroy me, Andrew. You just freed me.”
“Mariana! Please!” Andrew screamed as the guards pulled him back to his feet and began dragging him toward the heavy courtroom doors. “DON’T LEAVE ME! MARIANA!”
The court session was short and swift.
With overwhelming evidence, video footage, financial records, and confessions from Brenda and Margaret, the judge showed zero mercy.
Andrew Sterling was sentenced to twelve years in state prison without parole for grand theft, corporate fraud, and domestic assault. Margaret Sterling was sentenced to four years in a medium-security facility for larceny and filing false reports. Brenda received three years of probation and community service, stripped of every dollar she had acquired.

As Andrew was led away through the rear doors to begin his sentence, he looked back one last time.
Mariana was already standing up, shaking hands with the prosecutor, surrounded by people who respected her, loved her, and honored her strength. She never turned around to watch him leave.
